Summary of Conditional Formatting Rule Actions

The topic of this article apply equally to all OnePager editions that import from data sources like Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, Smartsheet, and Oracle Primavera P6.

The purpose of this article is to summarize the discussion on telling OnePager what actions to take when a Conditional Formatting Rule does apply. For this purpose, there are six (6) fields that you can set to conditionally format the task bars/milestone symbols. These fields are described in the table below, which gives the name of the field in the Conditional Formatting Rules form, a description of the allowable options, and how you specify the formatting action to take:

Conditional Formatting Form Columns Description Instructions
Color (foreground and background) If the condition is true, apply the selected fill color to the task bar/milestone symbol. If the condition is false, retain the default color for the task bar/milestone symbol. Click the Color dropdown to access the standard Color Chooser form.
Taskbar Shape If the condition is true, use the selected task bar shape to represent the task. If the condition is false, the task bar shape retains its default shape. Click the Taskbar Shape dropdown to access the Taskbar shape list.
Milestone Shape If the condition is true, use the selected milestone symbol shape to represent the milestone symbol. If the condition is false, the milestone symbol shape retails its default shape. Click the Milestone Shape dropdown to pop up the milestone Shape Chooser form.
Fill Pattern (gradient and hash) The gradient and hash fill patterns are selected from the dropdown form containing two sub-tabs: (1) Gradients and (2) Hash Fill Patterns. Click the desired sub-tab and then select the specific gradient or hash symbol.
Height % The height of the task bar/milestone symbol in the rule is expressed as a percentage of row height. If the condition is true, resize the task bar/milestone symbol to the specified height. If the condition is false, the task bar/milestone symbol retains the global default height. Any positive number can be used.
Border The border properties of the task bar/milestone symbol in the rule can be changed to the values specified in the Border style rules form. If the condition is true, use the border properties specified in the Border style rules form. If the condition is false, use the default border properties for the task bar/milestone symbol. Click the Border dropdown to access the border list. You can set the border’s color, width, and style (solid, dash, dot, etc.)
Label Font The task bar/milestone symbol’s name label fonts can be changed to the value specified in font selector. If the condition is true, use the name label font specified in the Font properties form. If the condition is false, use the default name label font. Clicking the name label font cell accesses the font selector. You can set the font face, color, size, and style (bold, italic, underline)
Priority The priority in the rule is established by OnePager and stepped by one each time a rule is added. See the next section for more details. Positive integer numbers are used.
Legend Text The legend text property of the task bar/milestone symbol in the rule can be changed in the Legend to the value specified. If the condition is true, use the Legend text specified in the Legend text cell. If the condition is false, use the default Legend text. Any text string.
Label Position The label position property of the task bar/milestone symbol in the rule can be changed using the label position dropdown in the cell. If the condition is true, use the Label Position value in the Label Position cell. If the condition is false, use the default label location. Select any of the thirteen (13) available label locations.

Priority

The last column on the far right in the Conditional Formatting Rules grid is the Priority column. The Priority column controls the sequence in which the rules are applied. OnePager automatically assigns increasing numbers to the Priority column as rules are defined. If several rules are in competition to set a particular formatting property, the rule with the lowest Priority number has priority over all the others. You can change the values in the Priority column at any time after the rule is completely defined, and any positive numeric value is acceptable.

Legend Text

The next to last column to the right is the Legend Text column. Whenever the result of a Conditional Import set of rules results in a Legend entry being created, you can provide the text for that Legend entry by providing appropriate text in the Legend Text column for the applicable rule.

Label Position

The third column from the right side of the grid is the Label Position column. Whenever the result of a Conditional Formatting set of rules results in a Text Label entry being created, you can provide the label position for that Label entry by selecting from one of the thirteen (13) standard label positions provided in the dropdown.

No Action Taken

When defining rules, any action field (e.g., color, task bar shape, milestone shape, borders, etc.) that is left blank is interpreted by OnePager as a no action. This amounts to retaining the default setting for that property. If you want to edit an action to become a no action, just check the use default checkbox On for the grid cell in question. Use default checkboxes are provided for Taskbars, Milestone shapes, Borders, and Label fonts.

Number of Rules

You can apply the approach described above to define as many rules as required. When you are finished, click the OK button in the Conditional Formatting Rules form which returns you to your starting place in the Task Bar tab or the Milestones tab. Click the Apply button and or OK buttons in the Chart Properties form to have OnePager apply the rules to the chart. For the Template Properties form, click the Save and Use button to have OnePager apply these rules to any chart that is created from the Template.
