Hiding and Unhiding Task/Milestone Text Labels

1) Since the method for selecting task bar name labels changed in OnePager Pro and Express version 7.0, it is strongly recommended that you read this article before proceeding further: Selecting Task/Milestone Shapes and Text Labels 9.1.1-70.

Hiding Task Bar Name Labels Using the Home Ribbon Tool Bar Tab's Label Position Dropdown

2) The easiest way to hide a task bar name label is to select it with a left-click.

3) This action enables the Label Position controls on the Home ribbon tool bar tab.

4) Click the Label Position button to access the Label Position dropdown and click the Hide command as shown below:

P70-9 3 1-(1)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(1)-05182020.png

5) At the completion of the operation, the chart looks like this:

P70-9 3 1-(2)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(2)-05182020.png

UnHiding Task Bar Name Labels Using the Home Ribbon Tool Bar Tab's Label Position Dropdown

6) Although the task bar name label in the illustration above is hidden in the chart it can still be selected with the left-click.

7) Mousing around the task bar is a way to find the hidden task bar name label as the mouse cursor changes to an arrow plus sign as shown below:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(1C)-06212019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(1C)-06212019.png
File:P70-9 3 1-(3)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(3)-05182020.png

8) Performing a left-click with the cursor in the arrow plus sign configuration highlights the task bar name label's border but the task bar name label itself remains hidden as shown here:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(1D)-06212019.png

File:P70-9 3 1-(4)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(4)-05182020.png

9) When a hidden task bar name label is selected in this manner the Label Position controls are enabled.

10) It is possible to access the Label Position dropdown and to select one of the other options to re-position the hidden task bar name label.

11) The simplest way to unhide a hidden task bar name label using the Label Position controls is to select the original label position for the hidden task bar name label before it was hidden.

12) You may also select a different label position for the hidden task bar name label using the Label Position controls.

13) For illustrative purposes, suppose the hidden task bar label, previously to the right of its associated task bar, needs to be put in a Comment Box.

14) This can be done by assuring that the hidden task bar name label is selected as described above.

15) With the hidden task bar name label selected, go to the Label Position button on the Home ribbon tool bar tab, access the dropdown, and click the In comment box option.

16) The result is shown below after re-positioning the Comment Box:

Hiding/Unhiding Task Bar Name Labels Using the Format... Command in the Right-Click Context Menu

17) You can hide one or more of the task bar name labels.

18) To do this, make a selection in the Chart Editor by right-clicking one or more task bar name labels to access the the context menu shown here:

P70-9 3 1-(6-1)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(6-1)-05182020.png

19) Click the “Format…” command then navigate to the Task Labels tab as shown below:

P70-9 3 1-(7)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(7)-05182020.png

20) Uncheck the Show Task/Milestone label checkbox OFF, shown above, to hide the selected task bar name labels.

21) Alternatively, you can click the Hide option as shown below in the Label Position dropdown on the Home ribbon tool bar tab to hide the task bar name label for the selected task bar/milestone symbol.

P70-9 3 1-(1)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(1)-05182020.png

22) If you have previously hidden the task bar name label of any task bars/milestone symbols, you can unhide them by going back to the Task Labels tab of the Change Task/Milestone Properties form shown above and rechecking the Show task/milestone label checkbox back to ON.

23) Or, you can click the UNDO command above the Ribbon tool bar tabs.

Hiding and Unhiding Tasks/Milestones Bars and Symbols

1) You can hide task/milestone shapes alone with its text label.

2) To do this, select one or several task/milestone shapes with a right-click to access the context menu.

3) Then click the Hide command in the context menu shown below:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(3)-06182019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(3)-06182019.png
P70-9 3 1-(8)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(8)-05182020.png

4) When the operation is complete the chart looks like this:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(4)-06182019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(4)-06182019.png
P70-9 3 1-(9)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(9)-05182020.png

5) When tasks/milestone shapes and text labels with Task Links are hidden their associated Task Links are hidden as well.

6) If you have hidden some tasks/milestone shapes and text labels and want to make them all visible again, go to the Home ribbon’s Editing group and click the Show/Hide dropdown menu.

7) Then, click the Show All Task/Milestones command as shown below:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(5)-06182019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(5)-06182019.png
P70-9 3 1-(10)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(10)-05182020.png

8) When text labels are hidden separate from their associated task/milestone shape, the Show All Task/Milestones command in the Show/Hide dropdown menu does NOT restore visibility to these hidden text labels.

9) Separately hidden text labels can be restored by right-clicking on their visible task/milestone shape, accessing the context menu and clicking the Format... command to access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form at the Format tab.

10) Once in the form, navigate to the Task Labels tab and recheck the Show task/milestone labels checkbox On.

11) Unhiding task/milestone shapes with Task Links unhides the Task Links if the chart is set up to show Task Links.

Moving Tasks/Milestones to Different Rows

1) A lot of the power of OnePager comes from its efficient handling of space in the graph area.

2) To manage vertical space, it is often very useful to move tasks/milestones so that several of them occupy the same row.

3) To do this, select one or multiple tasks or milestones.

4) From here you can change row position assignments several ways:

Drag with the Mouse

5) Drag task/milestone shapes up or down to a new row position.

6) Note that it is not possible to drag task/milestone shapes left or right.

7) This prohibition is to protect the integrity of the data received from the Microsoft Project or Microsoft Excel source plan that provided the task/milestone’s original Start and Finish dates.

8) To move any task/milestone shape from one row to another, first left-click the task/milestone shape to select it.

9) With the left-click button held down, drag the selected task/milestone shape to the desired row as shown in the BEFORE and AFTER illustrations below:

BEFORE

AFTER

P70-9 3 1-(12)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(12)-05182020.png

10) You can select several task/milestone shapes and drag them as a group to different rows.

11) The multiple task/milestone shapes selected retain their relative positions when dragged up or down to different rows.

12) When moving task/milestone shapes to different rows their text labels may overlap with other text labels, other task/milestone shapes, or the edges of the graph.

13) In the illustration below, the text label for the right most task/milestone shape in the gaining row was re-positioned to the right of the right most task for readability purposes as shown below:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(8)-06192019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(8)-06192019.png
P70-9 3 1-(13)-05182020.png
P70-9_3_1-(13)-05182020.png

14) Task/milestone shape and text label overlaps or collisions happen often enough such that OnePager Pro and Express version 7.0 are enhanced with a new feature that automatically detects these text label collisions and provides several methods for avoiding them.

15) For more information on resolving text label collisions, please see this article: Resolving Task/Milestone Text Label Collisions (Portal) 9.7.1-70.

Use the Arrow Keys

16) Move selected tasks/milestone shapes to new rows by using your keyboard’s up/down arrow keys.

17) As noted above, you can move several task/milestone shapes at once using this method.

Changing the Representation of Tasks/Milestones

1) Task bars can also be represented as milestone either at their start date or finish date.

2) You can select the type of task representation globally or on an individual task/milestone basis.

3) For more information on Managing Templates, please see the article at: Managing Templates (Portal)) 24.0.1-70.

4) An individual task bar can be changed to a milestone by right-clicking the task and selecting Task representation command as shown below:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(9)-06192019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(9)-06192019.png

5) There are four (4) options available that can be applied to the selected task:

a) The Gantt bar option makes the selected task/milestone shape into a task bar.
b) The As milestone at finish option turns a selected task shape into a milestone shape positioned at the task shape’s finish date.
c) The As milestone at start option turns a selected task shape into a milestone shape positioned at the task shape’s start date.
d) The Use default option turns a selected task/milestone shape into the default type specified in the current Template Properties form in the Advanced Tab within the Task Representation group.

6) Thee illustration below is provided to assist.

7) You can also change task representation on the Home tab by clicking the item called Representation.

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(10)-06192019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(10)-06192019.png

8) Changing the task representation of a selected task/milestone shape or set of task/milestone shapes creates what we refer to as representation maverick.

9) If you wish to change the global task/milestone task representation (as opposed to changing representations manually), please reference this article: Managing Templates (Portal) 24.0.1-70

10) To make changes to a task/milestone shape representation use the following steps:

a) Open the Chart Properties form and go to the Advanced tab as shown below:
File:P70-9 3 1-70-(11-1)-06192019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(11-1)-06192019.png
b) Individual task/milestone shape settings are overridden by the Task/Milestone threshold setting.
c) This setting automatically converts short-duration task shapes into milestone shapes for easier reading.
d) The default value for this setting is 2 days.
e) This means that any task shapes with less than 2 days duration on the screen is automatically rendered as a milestone shape.
f) To reduce this effect, increase the number (e.g. to 5 days).

Resizing the Height of Tasks/Milestones

1) OnePager provides the capability to change the height of a task/milestone shape by first selecting it and then dragging the grab box at the top or bottom of the selection task/milestone shape up or down, as shown below.

2) When the height is increased, both the top and bottom of the task/milestone shape expand. Conversely both the top and bottom of the task/milestone shape contract when you reduce the task/milestone shape’s height:

P61-9 3 1-61-(11)-10272017.png
P61-9_3_1-61-(11)-10272017.png

3) If you prefer to set a fixed height for a task/milestone shape instead of dragging it, right-click the task/milestone shape and choose the Format…. command.

4) This shows the Change Task/Milestone Properties form, where you have the option to adjust the Height control:

File:P70-9 3 1-70-(12)-06192019.png
P70-9_3_1-70-(12)-06192019.png

5) The Task Height controls, shown above, allow you to select whether you want the selected task/milestone shape’s height to be a percentage of the row height (recommended) or if you want the task/milestone shape’s height to be in terms of absolute height in inches or centimeters.

6) The quantity in parentheses, (row height = 0.38) tells you the current height of the row that contains the task/milestone shape.

7) Changing the height of an individual task/milestone shape creates a height maverick.

8) Changing the height of an individual task/milestone shape does not change the height of the row containing the selected task/milestone shape.

9) If you wish to change the global task/milestone shape height (as opposed to making height mavericks), please reference this article: Managing Templates (Portal) 24.0.1-70.
