Introduction to Zebra Striping in OnePager
The Legend can be shown or hidden in the chart as described in the article at: Managing the Legend in the Chart 15.1.1-70
+
This article describes OnePager’s operation for both OnePager Pro and OnePager Express. Illustrations used in the article are from OnePager Pro but the controls and manual edits apply equally to OnePager Express.

Additionally, the above article reference describes on how to move and resize the Legend in the chart.
+
Overview
Further, Legend positioning options are discussed in the article at: Legend Position Options for Multi-Page Outputs 15.2.1-70
+
When OnePager charts consist of many rows with task bars/milestone symbols closely spaced within the rows, it may be difficult for your audience to focus on a particular row and its task bars without confusing the intended focus with nearby rows and task bars. This can be remedied manually by adding blank/empty rows to vertically space task bars from another. This solution does lead to increasing the vertical height of the document and may further hinder the focus necessary to achieve the chart’s goals and objectives.

The purpose of this article is to describe:
+
OnePager provides an alternative means for visually achieving vertical separation between rows and swimlanes – zebra striping.  Zebra striping OnePager charts can be done between rows or at any one of the three swimlane levels defined and shown in the chart.  Here are an example of a chart with row zebra striping:

:1) The controls available for editing the Legend globally before a chart is created

 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(1)-08182020.png</center>-->

:2) Editing operations using the Chart Properties form
+
With row zebra striping, both the defined and shown text column cells in the rows and the row portion in the graph area are zebra striped.  To avoid hindering the visibility of the task bars/milestone symbols in the row and any associated decorations such as baselines, deadlines, and endpoints, the row zebra striping is ordered behind the task bars/milestone symbols and their decorations.

:3) Editing the Legend in the chart with the Legend’s context menu
+
Using the Left#2 swimlane level defined and shown in the above illustration, we can zebra stripe the Left#2 swimlane level as shown here:

:4) Editing individual Legend items with their context menu.

Legend Global Editing
+
The decision to use or not use either row or swimlane zebra striping should be determined by your goals and objectives for the schedule discussion presentation being prepare and that of the audience as well.  The controls for row zebra striping and swimlane level zebra striping are located in the Template Properties and Chart Properties form’s Main tab’s Color control group’s Chart Background sub-control group as shown here for the Chart Properties form:

Global settings for the Legend are found in the Template Properties form’s Legend tab as shown below:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(3)-08142020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
Within the Chart Background sub-control group are three controls, two for accessing the standard OnePager Color Chooser form for establishing the alternating colors for the zebra striping and the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list for selecting the options available for setting the chart’s Background color or colors. The Color 1 and Color 2 dropdowns for accessing the standard OnePager Color Chooser forms provide the controls for selecting the colors that alternate between rows or swimlanes in the chart.
<center>P70-15_1_1-70-(4-1)-09152020.png</center>
+

As shown above, the controls in the Legend tab are enabled when the Show legend checkbox is checked ON. Otherwise, all the controls in the Legend tab are disabled.
+
The Chart fill pattern: dropdown list is shown below:

Above are the default setting for the Legend provided with all distributed Template Properties forms for OnePager Pro. Making edits to these settings impacts the Legend’s properties for all charts created with the edited Template Properties form.  These Legend settings are carried forward to the Chart Properties form for all charts created with the associated Template Properties form and its settings in the Legend tab.  Since the controls shown above for the Template Properties form’s Legend tab are identical to the controls for the Legend tab in the Chart Properties form, discussion of each control is focused on the Chart Properties form’s Legend tab in the section that follows.

Using the Chart Properties Form’s Legend Tab
+
In the illustration above, the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list includes Row stripes and the three levels of swimlane level stripes.  The list is modified based on the number of swimlane levels to include only those swimlane levels that are defined for the chart.  Swimlane levels are defined in the Rows/Swimlanes tab.

The Legend tab for the Chart Properties form looks like this:
+
There are five additional Chart fill patterns available in the dropdown list: Solid, Top to bottom, Bottom to top, Left to right, and Right to left.

<center></center>
+
These five Chart fill patterns are covered in the section below at this link: Using Other Color Chart Fill Patterns in OnePager Pro Charts <!--12.24.1-70-->
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(2-1)-09152020.png</center>
+

As with the Template form’s Legend tab, the controls in the Chart Properties form’s Legend tab are not enabled and cannot be edited until the Show legend checkbox is checked ON.  In the sub-sections that follow, each of the control groups and controls are discussed in detail.
+

The Layout control group consists of two (2) radio buttons that position the Legend either vertically in the chart or horizontally in the chart.  The default setting is Vertical and OnePager positions the Legend, when shown, in the upper right corner of the graph.  The illustration below shows the Legend with the Horizontal radio button selected.
+
As an example, if only the Left#1 and Left#3 swimlane levels are defined and shown in the chart, the list only includes the Left#1 and Left#3 swimlane stripes entries along with Row stripes entry and the other entries shown above the Row stripes entry as shown here:

<center></center>

<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(4A)-08212020.png</center>-->

OnePager initially positions the Horizontal Legend at the bottom of the graph.  You can perform all the re-positioning, resizing, and editing operations on the Horizontal Legend as are available for the Vertical Legend.  Additionally, the Horizontal Legend’s context menu can be accessed as well as each individual Legend right-click context menu and all allowable edits can be made.  The Horizontal Legend can be reconfigured to the Vertical Legend at any time and any edits made to the Horizontal Legend are retained in the Vertical Legend.
+
Clicking either the Color 1 or Color 2 dropdown button accesses the standard OnePager Color Chooser form as shown here for Color 2:

<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(5)-08142020.png</center>-->

There are two (2) sets of controls for editing font properties of the Legend-items and Legend-title.  For both sets of controls, clicking the dropdown button in the window to the immediate right of the control’s label access the standard Font properties form as shown below:
+
This article describes the controls for creating and editing zebra striping in the chart for rows and swimlane levels.  In addition, this article provides information on the control and management of output media where the chart contains row and/or swimlane zebra stripes.

Creating and Editing Row Zebra Stripes in a OnePager Pro Chart
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(4-1)-09152020.png</center>
+

There are six (6) controls in the Font properties form shown above which are standard in most applications involving text editing.
+
When a OnePager chart is configured with row zebra stripes it typically looks like this:

These controls include:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(1)-08182020.png</center>-->

:1) The Font Style, implemented as a dropdown list, includes the font styles installed on your computer.
+
As a convention, the row zebra striping includes the unhidden rows and any text column cells defined and shown in the chart as shown in the illustration above.

:2)  The Size control is a dial window where you can either click up or down or type in a desired font size integer value.
+
Creating Row Zebra Stripes
:3) Clicking the Color dropdown accesses the standard Color Chooser form.
+
To create simple row zebra stripes, access the Chart Properties form by clicking the Chart Properties button on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar as shown in the illustration below and navigate to the Main tab and the Chart Background sub-control group:

:4) The Bold button is a toggle that sets the selected text string as Bold text.
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(6)-08192020.png</center>-->

:5) The Italics button, also a toggle, sets the selected text string as Italic text.
+
For this example, the starting conditions have both the Color 1 and the Color 2 settings set to No fill and the Chart fill pattern: is set to Solid so that no colors or shading are shown in the chart’s graph area in the illustration above. Next, go to the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list and select the Row stipes option.  Then, click the Color 1 dropdown to access the standard OnePager Color Chooser form and select a color.    Do the same for the Color 2 dropdown to access the Color Chooser form again and select a color.

:6)  The Underline button operates as a toggle that sets the selected text strings Underline.
+
In the illustration below Color 1 is set to a light shade of red and Color 2 is set of a light shade of blue as shown below before applying the changes to the chart:

Legend Position Controls
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(7)-08192020.png</center>-->

The Legend position control group consists of a dropdown selection list and eight (8) radio buttons.  The four (4) selection options for the dropdown list as shown below:
+
When you click the Apply or OK button in the Chart Properties form, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:

<center></center>
+
<center></center>
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(5-1)-09152020.png</center>
+
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(8)-08192020.png</center>-->

The detailed discussion and proper use of these controls can be found in the article at: Legend Position Options for Multi-Page Outputs 15.2.1-70
+
To clarify how OnePager applies the row zebra striping, OnePager uses the Color 2 color starting on the bottom most row and alternates to Color 1 on the next row up and so on until the top row is reached. To illustrate this, if we return to the Chart Properties form’s Main tab and reverse the colors selected for Color 1 and Color 2, the new reconfigured chart looks like this:

Legend Width and Height Resizing Controls
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(9)-08192020.png</center>-->

There two (2) controls are for editing the width and length of the Legend box in the chart as shown below
+
Editing Rows with Zebra Stripes
<center></center>
+
Rows and text column cells can be edited regardless of whether rows are zebra striped or not.
<center>P70-15_1_1-70-(10-1)-09152020.png</center>
+

Legend resizing using the controls in the Legend tab of the Chart Properties form is done exactly like using the corresponding controls for the Comment box at the Chart Properties form's Comment Boxes tab.
+
For more information on editing row properties, please see the article at: Editing Row Properties <!--12.22.1-70-->

Given the similarity, detailed instructions for using the resizing controls shown for the Comment box can be found in this section in article at:  Creating and Managing Comment Boxes-Box Size Controls for Comment Boxes. 13.0.1-70
+
Adding a Row
Background Color Controls
+
If you add a blank/empty row to the chart, OnePager maintains the row zebra striping as specified in the Chart Properties form by including the added row as part of the scheme, assuming no maverick row colors are contained in the chart.  As an example, the chart below has a blank/empty row added below the Engineering Team 2 Development task bar and applied to the chart configuration just above:

The Background color controls for the Legend are positioned below the Width and Height controls shown in the illustration above. Clicking the window’s dropdown button accesses the standard Color Chooser form. You can use the standard Color Chooser form to select a background color for the Legend as well as use employ the No fill feature to give the Legend an appearance of transparency.  As with resizing the Legend, the controls and approach for using the No fill feature is the same as the approach for Comment boxes.
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(10)-08192020.png</center>-->

Detailed instructions for using the No fill controls shown for the Comment box can be found in this section of the article at:  Creating and Managing Comment Boxes-Using the No fill Feature. 13.0.1-70
+
In the chart illustrated above, OnePager maintains the arrangement of alternating color row zebra stripes starting with Color 2 at the bottom most row and working upward alternating colors between Color 2 and Color 1 until the top most row is zebra striped.

Controlling Duplication of Legend Items
+
Hiding a Row
The OnePager Legend can show all task bars and milestone symbols even if several of them have the same Color and Shape.  This often resulted in unnecessarily busy-looking Legends.  There is a control in the Template Properties and Chart Properties forms at the Legend tab giving you a checkbox to specifically tell OnePager Do not duplicate task/milestones items in the Legend regardless of their differences in color and/or shape.  This is shown in the Chart Properties form’s Legend tab below:
+
If we return to the original chart, and hide the row with the Engineering Team 2 Development task bar, OnePager again maintains the same alternating color scheme from the bottom most row to the top most row in the chart as shown here after the designated row is hidden:

<center></center>
+
<center></center>
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(6-1)-09152020.png</center>
+
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(11)-08192020.png</center>-->

As an example, the Legend below shows both a blue milestone symbol item and blue task bar with the Do not duplicate tasks/milestones checkbox checked OFF:
+
1The above chart maintains the row zebra striping scheme after the row is hidden.

<center></center>
+
Hiding a Swimlane
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(7)-10102019.png</center>
+

When the checkbox is checked ON, only the task bar for each color appears in the Legend.  Legend items for milestone symbols can be suppressed by checking the Do not duplicate tasks/milestones checkbox is checked ON as shown below:
+
In a similar way, hiding a swimlane level cell containing multiple rows is just an extension of the above example.  In the chart below the Integration & Testing Left#2 swimlane level cell and its four member rows are hidden.  After the swimlane level cell and its rows are hidden, the reconfigured chart looks like this when compared to the chart’s starting configuration:

<center></center>
+
<center></center>
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(8)-10102019.png</center>
+
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(12)-08192020.png</center>-->

On occasion, it can become necessary when checking the Do not duplicate tasks/milestones checkbox ON and OFF to right-click on the Legend and then click the Rebuild Legend command in the Legend right-click context menu as shown below:
+
Other Row Edits
<center></center>
+
OnePager attempts to maintain the specified row zebra striping scheme when other row edits are applied in the Chart Editor such as (1) Adding a swimlane, (2) Splitting swimlanes, (3) Grouping rows into swimlanes, (4) Adding a row to a swimlane, (5) Making each row into a swimlane, and (6) Merging swimlanes.
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(9)-10102019.png</center>
+

Performing this action tells OnePager to re-scan the graph and rebuild the Legend to assure that the appearance of the Legend corresponds to the information displayed in the Chart Editor.
+
For more information on the row edits mentioned above, please see the articles at links given below:

The Make title automatically checkbox, when checked ON (the default setting), tells OnePager to automatically generate the Legend title based on the Microsoft Project source plan field name selected for Task Bar/Milestone Fill Color on the Task Bars or Milestone tabs on the Chart Properties form shown here:
+
Mavericking A Row Background Color
<center></center>
+
Returning to the starting configuration of the chart with row zebra stripes, if we maverick a row’s Background color, that mavericked Background color is retained no matter how the rows in the chart may be manipulated as described in the previous examples.
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(10-1)-09152020.png</center>
+

When the checkbox is checked OFF, as shown below, the Legend title window under the Make title automatically checkbox is enabled and you can enter any desired Legend title for the Legend box displayed in the chart.
+
To show this, suppose we maverick the Background color of the row with the Engineering Team 2 Development task bar such that the new Background color for the row and its associated text column cells are yellow as shown here:

<center></center>

+
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(13)-08192020.png</center>-->

If the above illustrated edits are applied, the Legend looks like this:
+
To complete the example, if we now add a blank/empty row below the row containing the Internal Performance Validation task bar, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:

<center></center>
+
<center></center>

+
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(14)-08192020.png</center>-->

If the Make title automatically checkbox is subsequently rechecked ON, the Legend title window is disabled.  Its edited contents may remain in the window and the title of the Legend in the chart reverts to the Legend title selected for Task Bar/Milestone Fill Color on the Task Bars or Milestone tabs on the Chart Properties form as shown here:
+
While the row zebra striping scheme may cause a change around the row with the maverick Background color, the row zebra striping scheme is maintained for the chartMoving rows up and down in the chart using the row drag and drop method does not alter the overall row zebra striping scheme.

<center></center>
+

Creating and Editing Swimlane Level Zebra Stripes in a OnePager Pro Chart
Show Legend On: Control Group
+
When our example OnePager chart is configured with Left#2 swimlane level zebra stripes it looks like this:

The Show legend on: control group is provided to give you specific control over where the Legend is to appear on multi-page outputs. The default setting in the Template Properties and Chart Properties form’s Legend tab is All pages.  You can click the Pages radio button in the control group to enable the entry of specific output page numbers or series of page numbers in the window to the immediate right of the radio button.

The entry window accepts:
+
In the chart illustrated above, we’ve hidden the top and bottom row borders leaving the top and bottom swimlane borders unhidden at all swimlane levels to better focus on the Left#2 swimlane level zebra striping scheme.  As a convention, the swimlane level zebra stripes includes the unhidden swimlanes and any swimlane level cells defined and shown in the chart as shown in the illustration above.

Creating Swimlane Level Zebra Stripes
:2) A starting page number followed by a dash and an ending page number.

To create simple swimlane level zebra stripes, open the Chart Properties form by clicking the Chart Properties button on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar as shown in the illustration  below and navigate to the Main tab and the Chart Background sub-control group:

:3) Combinations of these are acceptable if separated by a comma as shown below:

For this example, the starting conditions have both the Color 1 and the Color 2 settings set to No fill and the Chart fill pattern: is set to Solid so that no colors or shading are shown in the graph area of the chart in the illustration above. Next, go to the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list and select the Left#2 swimlane stipes option. Then, click the Color 1 dropdown to access the standard OnePager Color Chooser form and select a color.    Do the same for the Color 2 dropdown to access the Color Chooser form again and select a color.

Show or Hide Legend Elements Control Group
+
In the illustration below Color 1 is set to a light shade of red and Color 2 is set of a light shade of blue as shown below before applying the changes to the chart:

The Show or hide legend elements control group provides options for how the Legend can be configured in the chart.  The Show or hide legend elements control group is shown here:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(16)-08202020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
When you click the Apply or OK button in the Chart Properties form, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(15-1)-09152020.png</center>
+

The default settings in the Template Properties and Chart Properties form’s Legend tab is to have the Title and Color/symbol items checkboxes checked ON. When the Gantt-bar diagram checkbox is checked ON, with the Title and Color/symbol items checkboxes checked ON as well, the Legend looks like this:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(17)-08202020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
In the above illustration, the Left#2 swimlane level is involved in the swimlane level zebra striping scheme. To enhance the above illustration further, only the top and bottom Left#2 swimlane level borders are showing and all other swimlane level and row top and bottom borders are hidden.  To clarify how OnePager applies the swimlane level zebra striping, OnePager uses the Color 2 color starting at the bottom most swimlane and alternates to Color 1 on the next swimlane up and so on until the top swimlane is reached.
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(16)-10102019.png</center>
+

When the Gantt-bar diagram and Milestone diagram checkboxes are checked ON, with the Title and Color/symbol items checkboxes checked ON, the Legend looks like this:
+
To illustrate this, if we return to the Chart Properties form’s Main tab and reverse the colors selected for Color 1 and Color 2, the new reconfigured chart looks like this:

Freeze Legend When Updating
+
Editing Swimlane Levels with Zebra Stripes
The Freeze legend when updating checkbox, where the default setting is OFF, prevents the Legend from being updated if new task or milestone items are found by OnePager when you add or replace a snapshot.   To prevent or freeze legend updates, check the Freeze legend when updating checkbox to ON in the Chart Properties form’s Legend tab as shown below:
+
In most cases, swimlanes and swimlane level cells can be edited regardless of whether swimlane levels are zebra striped or not.

Editing the Legend with the Legend Context Menu
+
Adding a Swimlane
Legend Context Menu
+
If you add a blank/empty swimlane to the chart, OnePager maintains the swimlane level zebra striping scheme as specified in the Chart Properties form by including the added swimlane as part of the scheme, assuming no maverick swimlane colors are contained in the chart.  As an example, the chart below has a blank/empty swimlane added below the Left#2 Planning Swimlane and applied to the chart configuration just above:

Once the Legend is displayed in the chart, a right click in a white space area accesses the legend right-click context menu as shown here:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(19)-08202020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
In the chart illustrated above, OnePager maintains the arrangement of alternating color swimlane level zebra stripes starting with Color 2 at the bottom most swimlane and working upward alternating colors between Color 2 and Color 1 until the top most swimlane is zebra striped.
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(19)-10102019.png</center>
+

Legend Context Menu Commands
+
Hiding a Swimlane
The legend right-click context menu allows you to make adjustments to the overall format of the Legend itself with the following controls:
+
If we return to the original chart, and hide the Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane, OnePager again maintains the same alternating color scheme from the bottom most swimlane to the top most swimlane in the chart as shown here after the designated Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane is hidden:

Hide Legend
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(20)-08202020.png</center>-->

Clicking the Hide legend command causes the Legend to disappear from the chart no matter where the Legend happens to be positioned.    To retrieve the Legend, go to the OnePager View ribbon tool bar tab and check the Legend checkbox in the Graphic Elements group ON.  You can also go to the Chart Properties form’s Legend tab and check the Show legend checkbox ON.
+
The above chart maintains it proper swimlane level zebra striping scheme after the swimlane is hidden.

Unhide All Items
+
Hiding a Row within a Swimlane
The Unhide all items command is disabled unless one or more Legend items in the displayed Legend are hidden.  When the Unhide all items command is enabled, clicking the command makes all previously hidden Legend items visible again.
+
When swimlane levels are zebra striped, the striping is at the swimlane level and rows within the swimlane levels come along for the ride so to speak.  Hiding a row in any swimlane in a chart where swimlane level zebra striping is specified decreases the height of the swimlane without making any change to the swimlane level zebra striping scheme.

Rebuild Legend
+
For more information on hiding and unhiding rows and swimlanes, please see the article at: Hiding and Unhiding Rows and Swimlanes <!--12.13.1-70-->

The Rebuild Legend command tells OnePager to scan the chart and rebuild the Legend from scratch, incorporating any changes that were made to specific task bars/milestone symbol's properties.  This is normally not necessary, but can be used if you think that the Legend has gotten out of sync with what is currently in the chart.
+
Other Swimlane Edits
Edit Legend Title …
+
OnePager attempts to maintain the specified swimlane level zebra striping when other row and swimlane edits are applied in the Chart Editor such as (1) Adding a swimlane, (2) Splitting swimlanes, (3) Grouping rows into swimlanes, (4) Adding a row to a swimlane, (5) Making each row into a swimlane (right-most swimlane level only), and (6) Merging swimlanes.

This command accesses Enter text form that  lets you edit the Legend’s title as shown below:
+

Mavericking A Swimlane Level Background Color
Title font… This command access the OnePager standard Font properties form shown below that lets you edit the six (6) font properties of the Legend title:
+
Returning to the starting configuration of the chart with Left#2 swimlane level zebra stripes, if we maverick the swimlanes Background color, that mavericked Background color is retained no matter how the swimlanes in the chart may be manipulated as described in previous examples.  To show this, suppose we maverick the Background color of the Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane such that the new Background color for the swimlane and its member lower swimlane levels, text column cells, and rows are yellow as shown here:

Item Font…
+
To complete the example, if we now add a blank/empty Left#2 swimlane level below the Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:

This command also accesses the OnePager standard Font properties form shown above that lets you edit the six (6) font properties of all Legend item text appearing in the Legend (as opposed to the Legend’s title).   When edits are made using the OnePager standard Font properties form, all displayed text Legend items are edited.  +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(22)-08202020.png</center>-->

Background Color…
+
While the swimlane level zebra striping scheme may cause a change around the swimlane with the maverick Background color, the swimlane level zebra striping scheme is maintained for the chart.  Moving swimlanes up and down in the chart (at any of the three swimlane levels) using the swimlane drag and drop method does not alter the overall swimlane level zebra striping scheme.

This commands accesses the OnePager standard Color Chooser form that lets you select the background color for the Legend.  In addition to being able to use any color palette or color, you have the option to use the No fill feature for the Legend’s background.
+
For more information on moving swimlane up and down in the chart, please see the article at: Moving Swimlanes <!--12.10.1-70-->

Order
+
Using Other Color Chart Fill Patterns in OnePager Pro Charts
Clicking the Order command displays an additional sub-context menu as shown below:
+
In addition to the row zebra striping and the three swimlane level zebra striping schemes, there are five other Chart fill patterns: options available for use as described in this section.

<center></center>
+
Solid Color Option for the Graph Area
<center>P70-15_3_1-70-(22)-10102019.png</center>
+

The sub-context menu for the Order command allows you to select any of the four (4) sub-commands that create the following results:
+
The Solid Chart fill pattern: uses only Color 1 to put a solid color into the graph area only as shown below:

:1) Bring to front. This sub-command puts the Legend in front of all other shapes in the chart.
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_24_1-(23)-08202020.png</center>-->

:2) Send to back.  This sub-command puts the Legend behind all other foreground shapes in the chart (but not behind background shapes).
+
The Solid Chart fill pattern: option does not Background color either text column cells or any swimlane level cells defined and showing in the chart.  The Color 2 dropdown list is ignored using the Solid Chart fill pattern: option.  Rows and swimlanes can be edited within the Chart Editor in most any manner and unchanged rows and swimlanes retain the selected Solid Chart fill pattern: as demonstrated in the two previous sections of this article for row zebra striping and swimlane level zebra striping.

:3) Bring forward.  Selecting the Bring forward sub-command option steps the Legend’s Z-Axis position forward by one increment of Z-level.  This is not very useful.
+
Top to Bottom Color Option for the Graph Area
:4) Send backward.  This sub-command steps the Legend backward by one Z-level.  This also is not very useful.
+
The Top to Bottom Chart fill pattern: option uses both Color 1 and Color 2 to show a transition of color in the graph area from Color 1 at the top of the graph area to Color 2 at the bottom of the graph area as shown dramatically in the illustration below:

Editing All Task Bars/Milestone Symbols in the Chart from the Legend
+
The Top to Bottom Chart fill pattern: option does not involve either text column cells or any swimlane level cells defined and showing in the chart.  Color 1 and Color 2 choice are both used in the Top to Bottom Chart fill pattern: option.  Rows and swimlanes can be edited within the Chart Editor in most any manner and unchanged rows and swimlanes retain the selected Top to Bottom Chart fill pattern: as demonstrated in the two previous sections of this article for row zebra striping and swimlane level zebra striping.

When the Legend and Legend items are displayed in the chart, a right click on a specific Legend item’s text or color bar accesses the Edit Legend Item form as shown here:

Edit Legend Item Form
+
The Bottom to Top Chart fill pattern: option does not involve either text column cells or any swimlane level cells defined and showing in the chart.  Color 1 and Color 2 choice are both used in the Bottom to Top Chart fill pattern: option.  Rows and swimlanes can be edited within the Chart Editor in most any manner and unchanged rows and swimlanes retain the selected Top to Bottom Chart fill pattern: as demonstrated in the two previous sections of this article for row zebra striping and swimlane level zebra striping.

The Edit Legend Item form has seven (7) specific controls for editing the Legend item’s text, the task bars/milestone symbol’s color, shape, and the position of the Legend item in the list of Legend items in the Legend as shown in more close up below:
+
Left to Right Color Option for the Graph Area
<center></center>
+
The Left to Right Chart fill pattern: option uses both Color 1 and Color 2 to show a transition of color in the graph area from Color 1 at the left of the graph area to Color 2 at the right of the graph area as shown in the illustration below:

Right to Left Color Option for the Graph Area
Clicking the dropdown button on the Color control accesses the OnePager standard Color Chooser form which is used to change the color of all task bars/milestone symbols in the chart associated with the selected Legend item.  Making an edit of the color in this way updates the color of all task bars/milestone symbols associated with the selected Legend item in the current snapshot, historical snapshots, and all future snapshots where the associated task/milestone shape appears.  Some care needs to be exercised when using the No fill checkbox on the standard OnePager standard Color Chooser form as checking the No fill checkbox ON makes the task bar/milestone symbol essentially transparent.
+
The Right to Left Chart fill pattern: option uses both Color 1 and Color 2 to show a transition of color in the graph area from Color 1 at the right of the graph area to Color 2 at the left of the graph area as shown in the illustration below:

To illustrate this, suppose that the Prime Legend item’s color bar is double-left clicked to access the Edit Legend Item form and the Color dropdown button is clicked to access the Color Chooser form where the No fill checkbox is checked as shown below:

The Right to Left Chart fill pattern: option does not involve either text column cells or any swimlane level cells defined and showing in the chart. Color 1 and Color 2 choice are both used in the Right to Left Chart fill pattern: option.  Rows and swimlanes can be edited within the Chart Editor in most any manner and unchanged rows and swimlanes retain the selected Right to Left Chart fill pattern: as demonstrated in the two previous sections of this article for row zebra striping and swimlane level zebra striping.

The Sequence set of controls consist of an up arrow button, a down arrow button, and a window for the integer number position of the selected Legend item in the list.  If the selected Legend item is the top most Legend item in the list, the up arrow button is disabled because the selected Legend item cannot be moved further up in the list.  If the selected Legend item is the bottom most Legend item in the list, the down arrow button is disabled because the selected Legend item cannot be moved further down in the list. For any selected Legend item not occupying either a top or bottom position in the list, both up and down arrow buttons are enabled.

When the above change is made, the page layout for printed output media is set to print two vertical pages as shown in the Page Break Mode display in the Chart Editor shown below:

Clicking the up arrow button once moves the selected Legend item up one position in the list and decrements the value in the integer number window by one. The action is applied to the Legend when you click the OK button at the bottom of the Edit Legend Item form.

Editing a Single Task Bar/Milestone Symbol in the Chart and the Legend
+
If we change to the Print Preview Mode in the Chart Editor, the two page document is previewed to look like this:

Manually Editing A Single Task Bar
<center></center>
 +
<center>P70-12_24_1-(32)-08202020.png</center>

You can edit a single task bar/milestone symbol in the chart using the Change Task/Milestone Properties form as described in the article at: Changing Individual Task/Milestone Properties (Color, Shapes, Labels, etc.) 9.2.1-70.
+
As shown in the Print Preview above, OnePager maintains the row zebra striping scheme between Page 1 and Page 2.  Additionally, OnePager places the Page Break in a position to try and maintain an equal number of rows between the two pages. The algorithm for this also attempts to minimize the number of swimlane level cell labels that must be repeated between pages. In the above illustration only the Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane level cell label is repeated from Page 1 to Page 2.  This same approach is continued for charts that have more rows and need to have their output media in the form of three or more pages.

Some edits to individual task bar/milestone symbol properties can add entries to the Legend if the edit involves a change in color or shape.
+
Creating Multi-Page Output Media with Charts Containing Swimlane Level Zebra Stripes
Example
+
When a chart contains one or more of the three possible swimlane level zebra striping schemes, OnePager attempts to follow the same vertical page division as used for charts for row zebra striping.  The chart below where swimlane zebra striping is applied at the Left#2 swimlane level is used as the  example:

For example, suppose we select a single task bar in the chart with a left click and then click the Format… button on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar tab to access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form as shown below:

<center></center>
+
To create a multi-page output from the above chart containing two vertical pages, go to the OnePager Page Layout ribbon tool bar tab and navigate to the Document Fitting control group, and change the Height option to 2 pages as shown below:

Introduction to Zebra Striping in OnePager

This article describes OnePager’s operation for both OnePager Pro and OnePager Express. Illustrations used in the article are from OnePager Pro but the controls and manual edits apply equally to OnePager Express.

Overview

When OnePager charts consist of many rows with task bars/milestone symbols closely spaced within the rows, it may be difficult for your audience to focus on a particular row and its task bars without confusing the intended focus with nearby rows and task bars. This can be remedied manually by adding blank/empty rows to vertically space task bars from another. This solution does lead to increasing the vertical height of the document and may further hinder the focus necessary to achieve the chart’s goals and objectives.

OnePager provides an alternative means for visually achieving vertical separation between rows and swimlanes – zebra striping. Zebra striping OnePager charts can be done between rows or at any one of the three swimlane levels defined and shown in the chart. Here are an example of a chart with row zebra striping:

P70-12 24 1-(1)-08182020.png

With row zebra striping, both the defined and shown text column cells in the rows and the row portion in the graph area are zebra striped. To avoid hindering the visibility of the task bars/milestone symbols in the row and any associated decorations such as baselines, deadlines, and endpoints, the row zebra striping is ordered behind the task bars/milestone symbols and their decorations.

Using the Left#2 swimlane level defined and shown in the above illustration, we can zebra stripe the Left#2 swimlane level as shown here:

P70-12 24 1-(2)-08182020.png

The decision to use or not use either row or swimlane zebra striping should be determined by your goals and objectives for the schedule discussion presentation being prepare and that of the audience as well. The controls for row zebra striping and swimlane level zebra striping are located in the Template Properties and Chart Properties form’s Main tab’s Color control group’s Chart Background sub-control group as shown here for the Chart Properties form:

P70-12 24 1-(3)-08182020.png

Within the Chart Background sub-control group are three controls, two for accessing the standard OnePager Color Chooser form for establishing the alternating colors for the zebra striping and the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list for selecting the options available for setting the chart’s Background color or colors. The Color 1 and Color 2 dropdowns for accessing the standard OnePager Color Chooser forms provide the controls for selecting the colors that alternate between rows or swimlanes in the chart.

The Chart fill pattern: dropdown list is shown below:

P70-12 24 1-(4)-08182020.png

In the illustration above, the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list includes Row stripes and the three levels of swimlane level stripes. The list is modified based on the number of swimlane levels to include only those swimlane levels that are defined for the chart. Swimlane levels are defined in the Rows/Swimlanes tab.

There are five additional Chart fill patterns available in the dropdown list: Solid, Top to bottom, Bottom to top, Left to right, and Right to left.

These five Chart fill patterns are covered in the section below at this link: Using Other Color Chart Fill Patterns in OnePager Pro Charts

For more information on defining swimlane levels and text columns, please see the articles at the links shown below:

Creating, Formatting, and Sorting Swimlanes Levels
Creating and Formatting Text Columns

As an example, if only the Left#1 and Left#3 swimlane levels are defined and shown in the chart, the list only includes the Left#1 and Left#3 swimlane stripes entries along with Row stripes entry and the other entries shown above the Row stripes entry as shown here:

P70-12 24 1-(4A)-08212020.png

Clicking either the Color 1 or Color 2 dropdown button accesses the standard OnePager Color Chooser form as shown here for Color 2:

P70-12 24 1-(5)-08182020.png

This article describes the controls for creating and editing zebra striping in the chart for rows and swimlane levels. In addition, this article provides information on the control and management of output media where the chart contains row and/or swimlane zebra stripes.

Creating and Editing Row Zebra Stripes in a OnePager Pro Chart

When a OnePager chart is configured with row zebra stripes it typically looks like this:

P70-12 24 1-(1)-08182020.png

As a convention, the row zebra striping includes the unhidden rows and any text column cells defined and shown in the chart as shown in the illustration above.

Creating Row Zebra Stripes

To create simple row zebra stripes, access the Chart Properties form by clicking the Chart Properties button on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar as shown in the illustration below and navigate to the Main tab and the Chart Background sub-control group:

P70-12 24 1-(6)-08192020.png

For this example, the starting conditions have both the Color 1 and the Color 2 settings set to No fill and the Chart fill pattern: is set to Solid so that no colors or shading are shown in the chart’s graph area in the illustration above. Next, go to the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list and select the Row stipes option. Then, click the Color 1 dropdown to access the standard OnePager Color Chooser form and select a color. Do the same for the Color 2 dropdown to access the Color Chooser form again and select a color.

In the illustration below Color 1 is set to a light shade of red and Color 2 is set of a light shade of blue as shown below before applying the changes to the chart:

P70-12 24 1-(7)-08192020.png

When you click the Apply or OK button in the Chart Properties form, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:

P70-12 24 1-(8)-08192020.png

To clarify how OnePager applies the row zebra striping, OnePager uses the Color 2 color starting on the bottom most row and alternates to Color 1 on the next row up and so on until the top row is reached. To illustrate this, if we return to the Chart Properties form’s Main tab and reverse the colors selected for Color 1 and Color 2, the new reconfigured chart looks like this:

P70-12 24 1-(9)-08192020.png

Editing Rows with Zebra Stripes

Rows and text column cells can be edited regardless of whether rows are zebra striped or not.

For more information on editing row properties, please see the article at: Editing Row Properties

Adding a Row

If you add a blank/empty row to the chart, OnePager maintains the row zebra striping as specified in the Chart Properties form by including the added row as part of the scheme, assuming no maverick row colors are contained in the chart. As an example, the chart below has a blank/empty row added below the Engineering Team 2 Development task bar and applied to the chart configuration just above:

P70-12 24 1-(10)-08192020.png

In the chart illustrated above, OnePager maintains the arrangement of alternating color row zebra stripes starting with Color 2 at the bottom most row and working upward alternating colors between Color 2 and Color 1 until the top most row is zebra striped.

Hiding a Row

If we return to the original chart, and hide the row with the Engineering Team 2 Development task bar, OnePager again maintains the same alternating color scheme from the bottom most row to the top most row in the chart as shown here after the designated row is hidden:

P70-12 24 1-(11)-08192020.png

1The above chart maintains the row zebra striping scheme after the row is hidden.

Hiding a Swimlane

In a similar way, hiding a swimlane level cell containing multiple rows is just an extension of the above example. In the chart below the Integration & Testing Left#2 swimlane level cell and its four member rows are hidden. After the swimlane level cell and its rows are hidden, the reconfigured chart looks like this when compared to the chart’s starting configuration:

P70-12 24 1-(12)-08192020.png

Other Row Edits

OnePager attempts to maintain the specified row zebra striping scheme when other row edits are applied in the Chart Editor such as (1) Adding a swimlane, (2) Splitting swimlanes, (3) Grouping rows into swimlanes, (4) Adding a row to a swimlane, (5) Making each row into a swimlane, and (6) Merging swimlanes.

For more information on the row edits mentioned above, please see the articles at links given below:

Adding a Row or Swimlane

Mavericking A Row Background Color

Returning to the starting configuration of the chart with row zebra stripes, if we maverick a row’s Background color, that mavericked Background color is retained no matter how the rows in the chart may be manipulated as described in the previous examples.

To show this, suppose we maverick the Background color of the row with the Engineering Team 2 Development task bar such that the new Background color for the row and its associated text column cells are yellow as shown here:

P70-12 24 1-(13)-08192020.png

To complete the example, if we now add a blank/empty row below the row containing the Internal Performance Validation task bar, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:

P70-12 24 1-(14)-08192020.png

While the row zebra striping scheme may cause a change around the row with the maverick Background color, the row zebra striping scheme is maintained for the chart. Moving rows up and down in the chart using the row drag and drop method does not alter the overall row zebra striping scheme.

For more information on moving rows up and down in the chart, please see the article at: Moving Rows

Creating and Editing Swimlane Level Zebra Stripes in a OnePager Pro Chart

When our example OnePager chart is configured with Left#2 swimlane level zebra stripes it looks like this:

P70-12 24 1-(15)-08202020.png

In the chart illustrated above, we’ve hidden the top and bottom row borders leaving the top and bottom swimlane borders unhidden at all swimlane levels to better focus on the Left#2 swimlane level zebra striping scheme. As a convention, the swimlane level zebra stripes includes the unhidden swimlanes and any swimlane level cells defined and shown in the chart as shown in the illustration above.

Creating Swimlane Level Zebra Stripes

To create simple swimlane level zebra stripes, open the Chart Properties form by clicking the Chart Properties button on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar as shown in the illustration below and navigate to the Main tab and the Chart Background sub-control group:

P70-12 24 1-(6)-08192020.png

For this example, the starting conditions have both the Color 1 and the Color 2 settings set to No fill and the Chart fill pattern: is set to Solid so that no colors or shading are shown in the graph area of the chart in the illustration above. Next, go to the Chart fill pattern: dropdown list and select the Left#2 swimlane stipes option. Then, click the Color 1 dropdown to access the standard OnePager Color Chooser form and select a color. Do the same for the Color 2 dropdown to access the Color Chooser form again and select a color.

In the illustration below Color 1 is set to a light shade of red and Color 2 is set of a light shade of blue as shown below before applying the changes to the chart:

P70-12 24 1-(16)-08202020.png

When you click the Apply or OK button in the Chart Properties form, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:

P70-12 24 1-(17)-08202020.png

In the above illustration, the Left#2 swimlane level is involved in the swimlane level zebra striping scheme. To enhance the above illustration further, only the top and bottom Left#2 swimlane level borders are showing and all other swimlane level and row top and bottom borders are hidden. To clarify how OnePager applies the swimlane level zebra striping, OnePager uses the Color 2 color starting at the bottom most swimlane and alternates to Color 1 on the next swimlane up and so on until the top swimlane is reached.

To illustrate this, if we return to the Chart Properties form’s Main tab and reverse the colors selected for Color 1 and Color 2, the new reconfigured chart looks like this:

P70-12 24 1-(18)-08202020.png

Editing Swimlane Levels with Zebra Stripes

In most cases, swimlanes and swimlane level cells can be edited regardless of whether swimlane levels are zebra striped or not.

For more information on editing swimlane properties, please see the article at: Editing Swimlane Properties

Adding a Swimlane

If you add a blank/empty swimlane to the chart, OnePager maintains the swimlane level zebra striping scheme as specified in the Chart Properties form by including the added swimlane as part of the scheme, assuming no maverick swimlane colors are contained in the chart. As an example, the chart below has a blank/empty swimlane added below the Left#2 Planning Swimlane and applied to the chart configuration just above:

P70-12 24 1-(19)-08202020.png

In the chart illustrated above, OnePager maintains the arrangement of alternating color swimlane level zebra stripes starting with Color 2 at the bottom most swimlane and working upward alternating colors between Color 2 and Color 1 until the top most swimlane is zebra striped.

Hiding a Swimlane

If we return to the original chart, and hide the Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane, OnePager again maintains the same alternating color scheme from the bottom most swimlane to the top most swimlane in the chart as shown here after the designated Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane is hidden:

P70-12 24 1-(20)-08202020.png

The above chart maintains it proper swimlane level zebra striping scheme after the swimlane is hidden.

Hiding a Row within a Swimlane

When swimlane levels are zebra striped, the striping is at the swimlane level and rows within the swimlane levels come along for the ride so to speak. Hiding a row in any swimlane in a chart where swimlane level zebra striping is specified decreases the height of the swimlane without making any change to the swimlane level zebra striping scheme.

For more information on hiding and unhiding rows and swimlanes, please see the article at: Hiding and Unhiding Rows and Swimlanes

Other Swimlane Edits

OnePager attempts to maintain the specified swimlane level zebra striping when other row and swimlane edits are applied in the Chart Editor such as (1) Adding a swimlane, (2) Splitting swimlanes, (3) Grouping rows into swimlanes, (4) Adding a row to a swimlane, (5) Making each row into a swimlane (right-most swimlane level only), and (6) Merging swimlanes.

For more information on the row edits mentioned above, please see the respective articles at links given below:

Adding a Row or Swimlane
Splitting Swimlanes
Grouping Rows into Swimlanes
Adding a Row to a Swimlane
Making Each Row into a Swimlane
Merging Swimlanes

Mavericking A Swimlane Level Background Color

Returning to the starting configuration of the chart with Left#2 swimlane level zebra stripes, if we maverick the swimlanes Background color, that mavericked Background color is retained no matter how the swimlanes in the chart may be manipulated as described in previous examples. To show this, suppose we maverick the Background color of the Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane such that the new Background color for the swimlane and its member lower swimlane levels, text column cells, and rows are yellow as shown here:

P70-12 24 1-(21)-08202020.png

To complete the example, if we now add a blank/empty Left#2 swimlane level below the Left#2 Integration & Testing swimlane, the chart is reconfigured to look like this:

P70-12 24 1-(22)-08202020.png

While the swimlane level zebra striping scheme may cause a change around the swimlane with the maverick Background color, the swimlane level zebra striping scheme is maintained for the chart. Moving swimlanes up and down in the chart (at any of the three swimlane levels) using the swimlane drag and drop method does not alter the overall swimlane level zebra striping scheme.

For more information on moving swimlane up and down in the chart, please see the article at: Moving Swimlanes

Using Other Color Chart Fill Patterns in OnePager Pro Charts

In addition to the row zebra striping and the three swimlane level zebra striping schemes, there are five other Chart fill patterns: options available for use as described in this section.

Solid Color Option for the Graph Area

The Solid Chart fill pattern: uses only Color 1 to put a solid color into the graph area only as shown below:

P70-12 24 1-(23)-08202020.png
