About the Milestones Tab for OnePager Pro
+
Overview
1) This tab page, shown below, lets you control the style and decoration of milestone symbols.
+
Illustrations used in this article are from OnePager Pro using data from Microsoft Project but the feature's function, controls, and manual edits apply equally to other OnePager editions that import from data sources like Microsoft Excel, Smartsheet, and Oracle Primavera P6.

2) Additionally, within this tab are the controls for creating and managing conditional formatting rules.
+
Under most circumstances the height of a swimlane is determined by the combined height of rows that are members of the swimlane.  Additionally, where there are multiple swimlane levels represented in the chart, an increase or decrease in a member row’s height increases or decreases the height of swimlanes in which the edited row is a member.  There are no global controls in OnePager either in the Template Properties or Chart Properties forms for specifically resizing the height of swimlanes.

<center></center>
+
To manually edit swimlane heights, at least one swimlane level must be present in the chart so that you can select a swimlane and manage its height manually. Swimlane heights can be manually increased or decreased in the Chart Editor by using a left-click in the desired swimlane level cell to select the swimlane and continue using the mouse in double-arrow cursor mode to drag and drop the grab boxes that accompany the swimlane selection to the desired swimlane height.

Default Milestone Symbol Styles Control Group
+
For more information of Resizing the Height of Rows, please see the article at:  Resizing the Height of Rows 12.11.1-72

3) Collected in this sub-control group are all the controls associated with defining or changing the properties of milestone properties.
+
Please keep in mind that any increases or decreases in swimlane heights in the chart impacts the heights of subordinate swimlanes, their member rows, and the chart’s height dimension.

4) These controls include:
+
This article covers how to adjust individual swimlane heights using available editing techniques in the Chart Editor.

Shape
Swimlane Height Changes When Member Rows Change Height
5) The dropdown menu shows many milestone symbols available for use as shown here:
+
As mentioned above, changing a row’s height changes the height of the swimlane in which the edited row is a member.  As an example, we can start with the chart shown below where there are three swimlane levels and two text columns:

<center></center>
+
<center></center>
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(2)-10302019.png</center>
+
<!--<center>P70-12_11_1-(2)-07102020.png</center>-->

Fill
+
To continue the example, we can select a row that is a member of all three swimlane levels in preparation for increasing that selected row’s height shown here:

6) This dropdown menu shows the five (5) available milestone symbol fill patterns or texture options as shown below:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(1)-07142020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
Using the top grab box on the selected row and dragging the mouse upward, the row’s height is increased as well as the heights of the swimlanes in which the selected row is a member as shown below:
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(3)-10302019.png</center>
+

Milestone Height
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(2)-07142020.png</center>-->

7) These two (2) radio buttons and their associated value windows allow you to set the milestone height as an absolute quantity (inches or centimeters) or as a percentage of the row height, which is shown in parentheses for reference as shown here:
+
Comparing the two illustrations above, there are a few things to observe:

<center></center>
+
:1) Significantly increasing the selected row’s height increased the Left#3 swimlane (Subcontractor A) height.
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(4)-10302019.png</center>
+

8) The values shown in the illustration above are the default settings established in most OnePager distributed Template forms.
+
:2) The Left#2 swimlane (Integration & Testing) height also increased because the selected row and the Left#3 swimlane in which the selected row is a member increased in swimlane height as well.

Border Controls
+
:3) Because the Left#2 swimlane level (Integration & Testing) is a member of the Left#1 swimlane level (Phase III), that highest level swimlane also increased its height.

9) In the upper right corner of the form, there are three (3) controls that allow you change (1) the color of milestone symbol border, (2) the width of the border and (3) the border’s style as shown below with the Border Color dropdown clicked to access the standard Color Chooser form:
+
:4) Finally, note that the height dimension of the chart is increased by the amount of increase of the selected row.

<center></center>
+
The example given above illustrates how swimlane levels are increased in height and also illustrates how increasing a selected row or row’s height can impact on the chart visually. When there are fewer swimlane levels visible in the chart, the impact on the entire chart by increasing row height is lessened.
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(5)-10302019.png</center>
+

10) Further, you have the capability to establish the border color to be the same as the milestone symbol fill color which effectively makes the milestone symbol border disappear.
+
Resizing the Height of Swimlanes
11) Clicking the dropdown button on the Border Color control accesses the standard Color Chooser form as shown in the above illustration.
+
Important!
12) The Border Width control allows you to set the value window for the width of the milestone symbol's border in inches or centimeters depending on the Template form being used.
+
Selection of multiple swimlane level cells using the CTL+Left-Click or the SHIFT+Left-Click methods is restricted to the same swimlane level.  That is, you may only use these selection methods to select multiple swimlanes in the same swimlane level.  OnePager Pro and Express Version 7.0 and later ignore any attempt to select a swimlane level cell in a swimlane level other than in the first swimlane level selected.

13) There are five (5) Border Styles to select from with the default style set at Solid as shown below:
+
CTL+Left-Click Selection of Multiple Individual Swimlane Level Cells
<center></center>
+
To select multiple swimlane level cells in the same swimlane level using the CTL+Left-Click method, initially select the first swimlane level cell without holding the CTL Key down.   Then, holding the CTL Key down, select the second and following swimlane level cells until all desired swimlane level cells are selected.
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(6)-10302019.png</center>
+

Task Bar/Milestone Fill Color
+
SHIFT+Left-Click Selection of Multiple Sequential Swimlane Level Cells
14) The Task Bar/Milestone Fill Color sub-control group provides two options for assigning initial colors to milestone symbols and is shown below:
+
To select a sequence of swimlane level cells in the same swimlane using the SHIFT+Left-Click method, go to the first swimlane level cell in the sequence, hold the SHIFT Key down, and left-click to select this swimlane level cell.  Next, go to the last swimlane level cell in the sequence with the SHIFT Key still held down and left-click this last swimlane cell in the sequence.  As a result, all the swimlane level cells from the first in the sequence to the last are selected.

<center></center>
+
For more information on Selection Method for Multiple Swimlanes, please see this section at:  Selection Methods Available for Multiple Swimlane Levels 12.0.2-72
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(7)-10302019.png</center>
+

15) You can specify a single color for all milestone symbols via the standard Color Chooser form when the Use on color: radio button is is checked On.
+
Changing the Height of a Single Selected Swimlane
16) More commonly, clicking the Color-code based on radio button allows you to select a field from your Microsoft Project source plan to assign a data driven color to each milestone symbol.
+
In the Chart Editor individual swimlanes in all visible swimlane levels can be selected by performing a left-click in the desired swimlane level cell as shown below:

17) The data driven color assignment is sometimes referred to as round-robin color.
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(3)-07142020.png</center>-->

18) OnePager goes in sequence through the color palette and assigns a new color when it finds a new distinct value in the data.
+
Once the desired swimlane is selected, used the grab boxes to increase or decrease the swimlane height using the same method as discussed for changing row heights.  An example of increasing a selected swimlane height is provided in the sub-section above.

19) If it finds more distinct values than there are colors in the palette, it starts over at the beginning of the palette and uses each color for a second data value, and so on.
+
Depending on your schedule discussion needs, you can increase or decrease the swimlane height of any swimlane level visible in the chart using the above method as illustrated here for increasing the swimlane height of a Left#2 swimlane:

20) Also note that the Color-code based on selects a single data field that applies to both task bar shapes and milestone symbols as shown here:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(4)-07142020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
Looking at the illustration above reveals several interesting impacts to the chart:
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(8)-10302019.png</center>
+

21) This is one of the few places where task bar shapes and milestone symbols are constrained to have the same default behavior.
+
:1) Increasing the Left#2 swimlane level’s height increases the height of the subordinate Left#3 swimlane levels and all its member rows.

Mirror format settings between milestones and task bars
+
:2) Because the selected Left#2 swimlane level (Integration & Testing) is a member of a Left#1 swimlane level (Phase III) that Left #1 swimlane level (Phase III) is increased in height.

22) This single checkbox sub-control is used so that you have the option to simply apply any property edits you make to milestone symbols to task bar shapes without having to go to the Task Bars tab of the Chart Properties form.
+
:3) As a result of the overall increase in swimlane level heights, the height dimension of the chart is increased as shown in the Chart Properties form’s Page Layout tab’s Document Setup control group’s Document height dial value window below:

23) When this checkbox is checked On, OnePager automatically makes any changes to Task Bar properties that are made to Milestone properties for all settings where a blue dot appears to the right of the setting as in the illustration below where the checkbox is checked On:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(5)-07142020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
The examples provided in this sub-section illustrates that it is possible to select any swimlane level cell and its swimlane and use the grab boxes provided to increase or decrease the swimlane height. If, as an alternative, you use the double-left-click to select a specific swimlane level cell, the action does not select the entire swimlane and it is not possible (using this selection method) to adjust the swimlane level’s height as shown below:
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(9)-10302019.png</center>
+

Milestone Symbol Decorations Control Group
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(6)-07142020.png</center>-->

24) There are five (5) decorations for Milestone symbols.
+
Multiple swimlane levels can be edited with respect to swimlane height using either of the multiple swimlane selection methods described in the above sub-section.

25) Each can be turned On by checking the associated checkbox to the left of the control's label as shown here:
+
Changing the Height of Several Selected Swimlanes in the Same Level
<center></center>
+
As an example, if we use the CTL+Left-Click method to select three swimlanes in the same Left#3 swimlane level, the resulting selection looks like this:
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(10)-10302019.png</center>
+

26) Each of these decoration’s controls can be accessed by clicking the adjacent button as shown in the illustration above.
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(7)-07142020.png</center>-->

27) When any of the five (5) decoration buttons are clicked, OnePager accesses a form with specific controls to manage the decorations for that decoration type.
+
To increase the height of all three swimlanes, move the cursor to one of the top grab boxes until the cursor becomes the double-arrow shape as shown here:

28) What follows is a description of each of the specific control forms associated with each of the five (5) decoration types:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(8)-07142020.png</center>-->

Milestone Label Properties...
+
With the double-arrow cursor showing (mouse left-click button held down), move the mouse upward to the desired swimlane height and release the mouse left-click button as shown below:

29) Clicking this button accesses the Set Label Properties form shown below wherein the source plan field name for the milestone symbol, milestone symbol label font properties, label positions, and label text collision avoidance controls can be set as shown here:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(9)-07142020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
At the end of the operation, all three selected swimlanes have their respective heights increased by the same amount and their member rows are increased in height.
<center>P70-21_5_1-70-(11)-10302019.png</center>
+

Milestone Symbol Name Field Selection
+
Changing the Height of Sequentially Selected Swimlanes in the Same Level
30) The Set Label Properties form's Label field dropdown as shown below allows you to access the full list of source plan field names imported by OnePager and select from the dropdown the field name OnePager uses to provide a visible milestone symbol label into the chart for each visible task/milestone shape:
+
As another example, if we use the SHIFT+Left-Click method to select four consecutive swimlanes in the same Left#3 swimlane level, the resulting selection looks like this:

<center></center>
+
<center></center>
<center>P70-21_3_1-70-(12)-10292019.png</center> <!--same as for task bars-->
+
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(10)-07142020.png</center>-->

Milestone Symbol Label Font Properties
+
As shown in the previous example above, to increase the height of all four swimlanes, move the cursor to one of the top grab boxes until the cursor becomes the double-arrow shape as shown here:

31) Clicking the Label font dropdown button accesses the standard Font properties form as shown below:
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(11)-07142020.png</center>-->

<center></center>
+
With the double-arrow cursor showing (mouse left-click button held down), move the mouse upward to the desired swimlane height and release the mouse left-click button as shown here:
<center>P70-21_3_1-70-(13)-10292019.png</center> <!--same as for task bars-->
+

32) The standard Font properties form allows you to set the Label text's font type, color using the standard Color Chooser form, the font size in pixels, and the Bold - Italics - Underline settings.
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(12)-07142020.png</center>-->

Milestone Symbol Label Position
+
Resizing Swimlanes by Resizing the Chart’s Document Height
33) The default milestone symbol label position is Best fit all directions as shown in the illustration below along with the other nine (9) available standard positions :
+
All swimlane levels and their member rows can be increased or decreased in height by resizing the entire chart.  Recall that the Template Properties and Chart Properties form’s Page Layout tab’s Documentation Setup control group has a control for setting Document height as shown below in its default setting:

<center></center>
+
<center></center>
<center>P70-21_3_1-70-(14)-10292019.png</center> <!--same as for task bars-->
+
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(13)-07152020.png</center>-->

34) The default setting of Best fit all directions gives OnePager the flexibility to establish Task/Milestone shape label positions that do not collide with other graphics in the chart.
+
If it is necessary to increase all row and swimlane height in the chart, this can be done by increasing the value in the Document height dial value control after clicking the Document height radio button ON.

35) One Pager's Text Label Collision Avoidance feature, discussed in brief next, provides you with a set of rules you can employ to tell OnePager how to position task/milestone text labels in the chart.
+
For the purpose of this example, if we change the Document height dial value control from its default value of 8.6 to 12.0, the resulting chart looks like this:

Smart Labeling Settings
+
<center></center>
 +
<!--<center>P70-12_12_1-(14)-07152020.png</center>-->

36) As mentioned, OnePager has a Smart Labeling or Text Label Collision Avoidance feature that attempts to avoid cluttered text labels appearing in the graph or at least to minimize the occurrences.
+
Comparing the two chart illustrations above, after the Document height increase, the resulting chart has increased row heights, increased swimlane heights, and the chart’s height dimension is increased to 12.0.  Because the chart’s height dimension is changed, the charts appearance in output media is changed as well and some adjustments may be required.

Overview

Illustrations used in this article are from OnePager Pro using data from Microsoft Project but the feature's function, controls, and manual edits apply equally to other OnePager editions that import from data sources like Microsoft Excel, Smartsheet, and Oracle Primavera P6.

For more information of Resizing the Height of Rows, please see the article at: Resizing the Height of Rows 12.11.1-72

Please keep in mind that any increases or decreases in swimlane heights in the chart impacts the heights of subordinate swimlanes, their member rows, and the chart’s height dimension.

This article covers how to adjust individual swimlane heights using available editing techniques in the Chart Editor.

Swimlane Height Changes When Member Rows Change Height

As mentioned above, changing a row’s height changes the height of the swimlane in which the edited row is a member. As an example, we can start with the chart shown below where there are three swimlane levels and two text columns:

P70-12 11 1-(2)-07102020.png

To continue the example, we can select a row that is a member of all three swimlane levels in preparation for increasing that selected row’s height shown here:

P70-12 12 1-(1)-07142020.png

Using the top grab box on the selected row and dragging the mouse upward, the row’s height is increased as well as the heights of the swimlanes in which the selected row is a member as shown below:

P70-12 12 1-(2)-07142020.png

Comparing the two illustrations above, there are a few things to observe:

1) Significantly increasing the selected row’s height increased the Left#3 swimlane (Subcontractor A) height.
2) The Left#2 swimlane (Integration & Testing) height also increased because the selected row and the Left#3 swimlane in which the selected row is a member increased in swimlane height as well.
3) Because the Left#2 swimlane level (Integration & Testing) is a member of the Left#1 swimlane level (Phase III), that highest level swimlane also increased its height.
4) Finally, note that the height dimension of the chart is increased by the amount of increase of the selected row.

The example given above illustrates how swimlane levels are increased in height and also illustrates how increasing a selected row or row’s height can impact on the chart visually. When there are fewer swimlane levels visible in the chart, the impact on the entire chart by increasing row height is lessened.

Resizing the Height of Swimlanes

Important!

CTL+Left-Click Selection of Multiple Individual Swimlane Level Cells

To select multiple swimlane level cells in the same swimlane level using the CTL+Left-Click method, initially select the first swimlane level cell without holding the CTL Key down. Then, holding the CTL Key down, select the second and following swimlane level cells until all desired swimlane level cells are selected.

SHIFT+Left-Click Selection of Multiple Sequential Swimlane Level Cells

To select a sequence of swimlane level cells in the same swimlane using the SHIFT+Left-Click method, go to the first swimlane level cell in the sequence, hold the SHIFT Key down, and left-click to select this swimlane level cell. Next, go to the last swimlane level cell in the sequence with the SHIFT Key still held down and left-click this last swimlane cell in the sequence. As a result, all the swimlane level cells from the first in the sequence to the last are selected.

For more information on Selection Method for Multiple Swimlanes, please see this section at: Selection Methods Available for Multiple Swimlane Levels 12.0.2-72

Changing the Height of a Single Selected Swimlane

In the Chart Editor individual swimlanes in all visible swimlane levels can be selected by performing a left-click in the desired swimlane level cell as shown below:

P70-12 12 1-(3)-07142020.png

Once the desired swimlane is selected, used the grab boxes to increase or decrease the swimlane height using the same method as discussed for changing row heights. An example of increasing a selected swimlane height is provided in the sub-section above.

Depending on your schedule discussion needs, you can increase or decrease the swimlane height of any swimlane level visible in the chart using the above method as illustrated here for increasing the swimlane height of a Left#2 swimlane:

P70-12 12 1-(4)-07142020.png

Looking at the illustration above reveals several interesting impacts to the chart:

1) Increasing the Left#2 swimlane level’s height increases the height of the subordinate Left#3 swimlane levels and all its member rows.
2) Because the selected Left#2 swimlane level (Integration & Testing) is a member of a Left#1 swimlane level (Phase III) that Left #1 swimlane level (Phase III) is increased in height.
3) As a result of the overall increase in swimlane level heights, the height dimension of the chart is increased as shown in the Chart Properties form’s Page Layout tab’s Document Setup control group’s Document height dial value window below:
P70-12 12 1-(5)-07142020.png

The examples provided in this sub-section illustrates that it is possible to select any swimlane level cell and its swimlane and use the grab boxes provided to increase or decrease the swimlane height. If, as an alternative, you use the double-left-click to select a specific swimlane level cell, the action does not select the entire swimlane and it is not possible (using this selection method) to adjust the swimlane level’s height as shown below:

P70-12 12 1-(6)-07142020.png

Multiple swimlane levels can be edited with respect to swimlane height using either of the multiple swimlane selection methods described in the above sub-section.

Changing the Height of Several Selected Swimlanes in the Same Level

As an example, if we use the CTL+Left-Click method to select three swimlanes in the same Left#3 swimlane level, the resulting selection looks like this:

P70-12 12 1-(7)-07142020.png

To increase the height of all three swimlanes, move the cursor to one of the top grab boxes until the cursor becomes the double-arrow shape as shown here:

P70-12 12 1-(8)-07142020.png

With the double-arrow cursor showing (mouse left-click button held down), move the mouse upward to the desired swimlane height and release the mouse left-click button as shown below:

P70-12 12 1-(9)-07142020.png

At the end of the operation, all three selected swimlanes have their respective heights increased by the same amount and their member rows are increased in height.

Changing the Height of Sequentially Selected Swimlanes in the Same Level

As another example, if we use the SHIFT+Left-Click method to select four consecutive swimlanes in the same Left#3 swimlane level, the resulting selection looks like this:

P70-12 12 1-(10)-07142020.png

As shown in the previous example above, to increase the height of all four swimlanes, move the cursor to one of the top grab boxes until the cursor becomes the double-arrow shape as shown here:

P70-12 12 1-(11)-07142020.png

With the double-arrow cursor showing (mouse left-click button held down), move the mouse upward to the desired swimlane height and release the mouse left-click button as shown here:

P70-12 12 1-(12)-07142020.png

Resizing Swimlanes by Resizing the Chart’s Document Height

All swimlane levels and their member rows can be increased or decreased in height by resizing the entire chart. Recall that the Template Properties and Chart Properties form’s Page Layout tab’s Documentation Setup control group has a control for setting Document height as shown below in its default setting:

P70-12 12 1-(13)-07152020.png

If it is necessary to increase all row and swimlane height in the chart, this can be done by increasing the value in the Document height dial value control after clicking the Document height radio button ON.

For the purpose of this example, if we change the Document height dial value control from its default value of 8.6 to 12.0, the resulting chart looks like this:

P70-12 12 1-(14)-07152020.png

Comparing the two chart illustrations above, after the Document height increase, the resulting chart has increased row heights, increased swimlane heights, and the chart’s height dimension is increased to 12.0. Because the chart’s height dimension is changed, the charts appearance in output media is changed as well and some adjustments may be required.
