About Task Labels

Task labels displayed in the OnePager Pro graph are imported from your Microsoft Project source plan’s Name field. At a minimum, the Microsoft Project Name field, along with the task's Start/Finish dates must be imported for OnePager Pro to create and display a chart. Once imported, task labels can be edited globally or manually in the graph. This article covers how to edit task labels.

Using the Chart Properties Form to Edit Task Labels

All task labels can be edited without changing the settings in the Template Properties form by clicking the Chart Properties button on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar tab in the Settings control group as shown below:

P70-10 1 1-(1)-06012020.png

Clicking the Chart Properties button access the Chart Properties form. Navigate to either the Task Bars or Milestones tab as appropriate. On the Task Bars tab, shown below, ensure that the Task Labels checkbox is checked ON:

P70-10 15 1-(1)-06042020.png

Clicking the Task Label Properties… button to the right of the Task Labels checkbox accesses the Set Label Properties for as shown here:

P70-10 15 1-(2)-06042020.png

There are two (2) control groups in the Set Label Properties form.

  • The top three controls in the Set Label Properties form provide Task Label global formatting options which are discussed below.
  • The second control group contains all the controls for you to tailor the operations of the Smart Text Optimization feature within OnePager Pro. This feature is also discussed below.

Task Label Format Controls

There are three (3) global task label formatting controls available at the top of the Set Label Properties form.

Task Label Field Selection

The Label field control is a dropdown list containing all imported fields from your Microsoft Project source plan as shown here:

P70-10 15 1-(3)-06042020.png

The default setting is the Microsoft Project Name field; however, any available field in the dropdown list shown above can be used to serve the purpose of the task label.

Task Label Font Controls

Clicking the drop down associated with the Label font control accesses the standard OnePager Font properties form shown below:

P70-10 15 1-(4)-06042020.png

Once the Font properties form is accessed, you have a variety of task label formatting options available including Font style; task label text color; font size; and options to Bold, Italic, and Underline the task label text.

Task Label Position Controls

The Label position dropdown list provides eleven (11) position options for the placement of the task label with respect to its associated task bar/milestone symbol as shown here:

P70-10 15 1-(5)-06042020.png

These Label position options are a subset of the full set of Label Position options available from the thirteen (13) options available using the Label Position dropdown found on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar’s Position control group shown here:

Smart Text Optimization Feature Controls

The bottom control group in the Set Label Properties form is devoted to the controls for the Smart Text Optimization feature.

The Smart Text Optimization feature is overviewed in the article at: Resolving Task Label Collisions (Portal)

For detailed information on the Smart Text Optimization feature for OnePager Pro, please see the article at: Resolving Task Label Collisions for OnePager Pro

Since the two articles referenced above cover the Smart Text Optimization feature comprehensively, this article focuses on the control group briefly.

Enabling and Disabling the Smart Text Optimization Feature

The control for enabling and disabling the Smart Text Optimization feature is the checkbox titled Enable Smart Labeling for task/milestone labels as shown below:

P70-10 15 1-(7)-06042020.png

All OnePager Pro Template Properties forms are distributed with the Enable Smart Labeling for task/milestone labels checkbox checked ON so the feature is enabled in the Template Properties form and in the Chart Properties form when charts are created and updated. At your option, you can disable the Smart Text Optimization feature by unchecking the Enable Smart Labeling for task/milestone labels OFF.

Smart Labeling Settings Control Group

The Smart Labeling Settings control group has four (4) sets of three (3) controls each as shown here:

P70-10 15 1-(8)-06042020.png

Each set is called an Escape Path which provides an alternative way to reorient a task label such that it no longer is in collision with another task label, task bar/milestone symbol, or another nearby informational text element.

Escape Path Controls

The three controls in each of the four sets are:

  • The Escape Path checkbox which, when checked ON, enables the Escape Path for consideration as a solution to the task label collision situation.
  • A limit control specifying the maximum extent to which the Escape Path can be applied. For example, the number 2 in the Wrap text up to Escape Path specifies that the subject task label can only be wrapped up to 2 lines.
  • The Priority of the Escape Path from highest to lowest among the four available Escape Paths tells the software which Escape Path to try first, second, and so on.

The default Escape Path is Wrap text up to 2 lines with the highest priority. Escape Paths can be enabled with any available priority ordering.

Re-optimizing After Updates Control

The Re-optimizing After Updates: control at the bottom of the form is specifically to tell OnePager which of three (3) options for re-optimizing task label collisions should be employed when the chart undergoes an UPDATE operation specifically in the Replacement Mode.

For more information on Replacement Mode Work Flows, please see the articles at: Basic Workflows (Portal)

There are three (3) Re-optimizing After Updates: options available are shown here:

P70-10 15 1-(9)-06042020.png

The selection of one of the three options tells OnePager how to handle task label collision situations that may arise as a result of updating the chart. These options are:

  • Do not re-optimize: When this option is selected, OnePager does not examine the updated chart to look for task label collision situations and does not perform any task label optimization.
  • Re-optimize changed tasks: Under this option, OnePager looks at those imported/updated tasks that have changed as a result of the update, examines only the changed tasks, and performs task label collision situation avoidance if collision situations are found for any changed tasks.
  • Re-optimize all tasks: Under this option, OnePager looks at all imported/updated tasks whether changed or not, examines all tasks, and performs task label collision situation avoidance if collision situations are found for any imported/changed tasks.

Editing Individual Task Labels in the Chart

There are three (3) methods for accessing the controls for editing individual task labels on individual task bars and milestone symbols:

  • You can right-click on any selected task bar/milestone symbol to access the task bar right-click context menu followed by clicking the Format… command.
  • You can right-click on the selected task label itself to access the task label right-click context menu followed by clicking the Format… command.
  • You can click the Format… button on the OnePager Home ribbon tool bar tab after selecting a task bar/milestone symbol or task label.

Each of these methods is discussed below.

Right-Clicking a Task Bar/Milestone Symbol or Task Label

Accessing the Change Task/Milestone Properties form with this method requires you to right-click on the task bar or milestone symbol or the task label to access the task bar right-click context menu for either.

Right-Clicking on a Task Bar/Milestone Symbol

This action accesses the available commands in the task bar right-click context menu when a task bar is right-clicked as shown below:

Right-Clicking on a Task Label

The Format… command can also be accessed by right-clicking a task bar's name label as shown here:

Show Task/Milestone Label

The Show task/milestone label checkbox determines if the selected task label is shown or hidden with respect to its associated task bar/milestone symbol. The default setting for this checkbox is checked ON. Unchecking the checkbox to OFF, hides the selected task label and disables the other controls on the Task Labels tab.

Label Position Options

There are eleven (11) label position options to select from using the Label Position dropdown list as shown below:

Editing the Task Label Only

The task label itself can be changed in the graph by right-clicking on the task label to access its right-click context menu as shown here where the Edit task name … command is available:

P70-10 15 1-(15)-06052020.png

When the Edit task name … command is clicked, the Edit text form is accesses as shown here:

P70-10 15 1-(16)-06052020.png

After typing in your changes to the selected task label, close the Edit text form by clicking the OK button. The updated task label appears in the same position as the old label/text and is considered a task label maverick. Mavericked task labels cannot be reversed, that is, returned to the value imported from the associated Microsoft Project source plan using the Use Label Defaults button discussed above on the Task Labels tab of the Change Task/Milestone Properties form.
