Hiding and Unhiding Task/Milestone Text Labels

Since the method for selecting task bar name labels changed in OnePager Pro and Express version 7.0, it is strongly recommended that you read this article before proceeding further: Selecting Task/Milestone Shapes and Text Labels

Hiding Task Bar Name Labels Using the Home Ribbon Tool Bar Tab's Label Position Dropdown

The easiest way to hide a task bar name label is to select it with a left-click. This action enables the Label Position controls on the Home ribbon tool bar tab. Click the Label Position button to access the Label Position dropdown and click the Hide command as shown below:

Unhiding Task Bar Name Labels

In previous versions of OnePager Pro and Express when a task bar name label is hidden, dragging the mouse over the area in the graph where the task bar name label was previously shown caused the cursor to change to a arrow plus sign. Left-clicking on this arrow plus sign selected the task bar and its task bar name label. In OnePager Pro and Express version 7.0, this feature is removed because in version 7.0 the selection of the task bar and the associated task bar name label are decoupled.


Hiding/Unhiding Task Bar Name Labels Using the Format... Command in the Right-Click Context Menu

You can hide one or more of the task bar name labels. To do this, make a selection in the Chart Editor by right-clicking one or more task bar name labels to access the the context menu shown here:

Click the “Format…” command then navigate to the Task Labels tab as shown below:

Uncheck the Show Task/Milestone label checkbox OFF, shown above, to hide the selected task bar name labels. Alternatively, you can click the Hide option as shown below in the Label Position dropdown on the Home ribbon tool bar tab to hide the task bar name label for the selected task bar/milestone symbol.

If you have previously hidden the task bar name label of any task bars/milestone symbols, you can unhide them by going back to the Task Labels tab of the Change Task/Milestone Properties form shown above and rechecking the Show task/milestone label checkbox back to ON. Or, you can click the UNDO command above the Ribbon tool bar tabs.

Hiding and Unhiding Task Bars and Milestones Symbols

You can hide task bars/milestone symbols alone with its task bar name label. To do this, select one or several task bars/milestone symbols and then use the right-click on one of them to access the task bar right-click context menu. Then click the Hide command in the context menu shown below:

When the operation is complete the chart looks like this:

When task bars/milestone symbol's and task bar name labels are hidden along with their associated Task Links as well. If you have hidden some task bars/milestone symbols and task bar name labels and want to make them all visible again, go to the Home ribbon tool bar tab’s Editing control group and click the Show/Hide dropdown menu. Then, click the Show All Tasks/Milestones command as shown below:

When task bar name labels are hidden separate from their associated task bar/milestone symbol, the Show All Task/Milestones command in the Show/Hide dropdown menu does NOT restore visibility to these hidden task bar name labels. Separately hidden task bar name labels can be restored by right-clicking on their visible task bar/milestone symbol, accessing the task bar right-click context menu and clicking the Format... command to access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form. At the Task Labels tab and recheck the Show task/milestone labels checkbox ON. Unhiding task bars/milestone symbols with Task Links unhides the Task Links if the chart is set up to show Task Links.

Moving Task Bars/Milestone Symbols to Different Rows

A lot of the power of OnePager comes from its efficient handling of space in the graph. To manage vertical space, it is often very useful to move task bars/milestone symbols so that several of them occupy the same row. To do this in the Chart Editor, select one or multiple task bars or milestone symbols. From here you can change row position assignments several ways:

Drag and Drop the Selected Task Bar with the Mouse

After selecting the desired task bar/milestone symbol, you can drag it up or down to a new row position. Note that it is not possible to drag task bars/milestone symbols left or right. This prohibition is to protect the integrity of the data imported from the Microsoft Project or Microsoft Excel source plan that provided the task bar/milestone symbol’s original Start and Finish dates. To move any task bar/milestone symbol from one row to another row, first left-click the task bar/milestone symbol to select it. With the left-click button held down, drag the selected task bar/milestone symbol to the desired new row as shown in the BEFORE and AFTER illustrations below:

You can select several task/milestone shapes and drag them as a group to different rows. The multiple task/milestone shapes selected retain their relative positions when dragged up or down to different rows. When moving task/milestone shapes to different rows their text labels may overlap with other text labels, other task/milestone shapes, or the edges of the graph. In the illustration below, the task bar label for the right most task bar/milestone symbol in the gaining new row was re-positioned to the right of the right most task bar for readability purposes as shown below:

Task bar/milestone symbol and task bar name label overlaps or collisions happen often enough such that OnePager Pro and Express version 7.0 are enhanced with a new feature that automatically detects these task bar name label collisions and provides several methods for avoiding them.

Use the Arrow Keys

You can also move selected task bars/milestone symbols to new rows by using your keyboard’s UP/DOWN arrow keys. As noted above, you can move several selected task bars/milestone symbols at once using this method.

Changing the Representation of Task Bars/Milestone Symbols

Task bars can also be represented as milestone symbols either at their start date or finish date. You can select the type of task bar representation globally in the Template Properties and Chart Properties forms or on an individual task bar/milestone symbol basis.

An individual task bar can be changed to a milestone by right-clicking the task and selecting Task representation command as shown below:

There are four (4) options available that can be applied to the selected task bars:

  • The Gantt bar option makes the selected task bar/milestone symbol into a task bar.
  • The As milestone at finish option turns a selected task bar into a milestone symbol positioned at the task bar’s finish date.
  • The As milestone at start option turns a selected task bar into a milestone symbol positioned at the task bar’s start date.
  • The Use default option turns a selected task bar/milestone symbol into the default type specified in the current Template Properties form in the Advanced Tab within the Task Representation control group shown here:
