By snapshot-dependent we mean that the value, style, or format of an object (i.e., task bar or milestone symbol property) can change from one snapshot to another as the underlying project data changesThe focus of this article is on the eleven (11) categories of fields shown above. When using OnePager to show these changes as they are made to the Microsoft Excel source plan on a regular basis, One Pager can add snapshots to the chart using the updated data from the current source plan.

This article covers the global adjustment of swimlane cells and text column cells widths using the controls in the Chart Properties formSince the controls in the Template Properties form are exactly the same as those in the Chart Properties form, only the controls in the Chart Properties form are discussed. This article also covers how to adjust the widths of swimlane cells and text column cells in the Chart Editor.

Globally Adjusting the Width of Text Columns or Swimlane Levels
Often it is important in schedule presentations to emphasize some of the above data items by collecting task bars/milestone symbols into rows and identify rows using one of the above fields. Using the processes of updating the chart with periodic snapshots, you can show how the any of the above fields change when shown in text columns accompanying rows in the chart.
+
The Chart Properties form's Rows/Swimlanes tab's Swimlanes and Text Columns control groups have identical controls for adjusting swimlane cells and text column cells widths as shown here:

OnePager Express automatically updates your chart with the latest data and shows the data in the appropriate text columns accompanying each row. When this is done, the chart's text column contents and the rows continue to be associated with one of the above fields and the snapshots change to show the most current data in the chart and in the text column as successive snapshots are taken over time.

Text Column Width Adjustment in the Chart Properties Form
The example that follows uses the %Done field to demonstrate how text columns are used to represent changing data through the progress of a project. The example illustrates how text columns represent changes in the contents of the fields listed at the beginning of this section above.
+
Additionally, for your convenience, there is an identical text column cell width control provided in the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form for each of the five (5) text columns as shown below for the Left#3 text column:

To provide a simple illustration of the snapshot-dependency of text column contents, we construct a Microsoft Excel source plan with a focus on the %Done field.
+
This control is useful when working with the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form where it might not be convenient to revert back to the Chart Properties form's Rows/Swimlanes tab.

In a fashion identical to the control in the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form, this control is useful when working with the Swimlane Formatting - Left#n form where it might not be convenient to revert back to the Chart Properties form's Rows/Swimlanes tab.

When OnePager Express (OPX) is launched to create a NEW chart, you have an opportunity to select the functions of the various Microsoft Excel fields as described elsewhere by examining and modifying the OnePager Choices (OPC) form. The example is such that each text column contents, row ordering, and collection of task bars into rows are set to use the %Done field to organize the chart. Additionally, rows are grouped into the Left#3 swimlane level using the Microsoft Excel source plan Resource field. When these controls are set either in the Template Properties or Chart Properties form through the Row and Swimlanes tab, the following first snapshot is created:
+
Examples
+
The chart below is configured with each swimlane level cell and each text column cell set to width 0.95 to show how their contents look in a narrow horizontal space:

+

In the first snapshot, the Left#3 text column cells are created with the %Done data from the Microsoft Excel source plan updated on 7/25/2020.
+

Second Snapshot
+
In the illustration above, two of the swimlane levels and the single text column appear to have crowded labels.

If the project’s Microsoft Excel source plan is updated, say on 8/25/2020 for this example, with the latest %Done data, that Microsoft Excel source plan looks like this:
+
Changing Swimlane Level Cell Widths - Example
+
This can be remedied in the Chart Properties form for the Left#2 and Left#3 swimlane level cells by using the Width control to increase the value to 1.50 as shown below:

+

The updates to the %Done data, shown above, as compared to the Microsoft Excel source plan captured on 7/25/2020, shows the progress the project is making in this example. If we create the snapshot on 8/25/2020, it looks like this:
+

+

+
In a similar manner the width of the Left#3 swimlane level cells are increased from 0.95 to 1.50 as shown here:

+

The task bars/milestone symbols are updated with the latest %Done data and the new progress information is shown in the Left#3 text column for each row. Rows are not reordered between snapshots but retains the row ordering originally established for the chart. The Microsoft Excel source plan did not change the Finish Date of any of the task bars to reflect their current %Done values.

Changing Text Column Widths - Example
+

+
Changing the crowded condition of the Left#3 text column cells follows similar steps involving the Width control found in the Text Columns controls group as shown below:
+

+

+

+

+
The illustration above show that it was necessary to increase all the Left#3 text column cells because the contents of the source plan's Name field for each imported task required more horizontal space so the width was increased to 3.00. The same results can be achieve if, in each of the examples above, the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form or the Swimlanes Formatting - Left#n form is used and their respective Width control values are changed.

Resizing the Width of Text Columns and Swimlane Levels Using Drag and Drop
+

+
If you need more horizontal space for the content in your text columns or swimlane levels, you can resize them using drag and drop techniques with your mouse. To do this, hover your mouse over the vertical edge of the target text column or swimlane level cells until the double-arrow cursor appears, then left-click the mouse as shown below for the Left#3 text column:
+

+

+

+

+
With the left-click button held down, drag the double-arrow cursor to the left or right as needed to widen or make the text column narrower as shown below where the Left#3 text column is widened:
+

+

+

+

+
When the double-arrow cursor is dragged to the desired position, release the left-click button and the selected text column's width is changed as shown below:
+

+

+

+

+
As shown in the illustration above, as long as the mouse cursor is hovering over a text column or swimlane level vertical boundary the mouse cursor retains the double-arrow shape. As you resize the cell's width, the size of your overall OnePager chart is adjusted accordingly.

Note that there can be an impact on the output media formatting for multi-page charts.

Resizing the Width of Text Columns and Swimlane Levels Using the Double-Click Method
+

+
You can quickly resize the width of a text column or swimlane level by positioning the mouse cursor on the right border of the text column or swimlane level and performing a double left-click with the mouse when the double-arrow cursor shape appears.
+

+
Suppose we have the chart shown below where the swimlane level cell contents and text column content are crowded and you want to resize these columns so that the contents fits without changing the text font as shown below:

Automatically Resizing the Width of Swimlane Levels
+

+
To automatically resize the width of a swimlane level, place the cursor on the right border of the swimlane level and double-click when the double arrow cursor shape appears. The result is shown below for the Left#2 swimlane level:
+

+

+

+

+
The double-click tells OnePager to examine all the swimlane level cells and make the width of the selected swimlane level adequate to display the contents of all swimlane level cells in the selected swimlane level as shown above. When this same method is applied to the Left#3 swimlane level in the above chart, the results look like this:
+

+

Automatically Resize the Width of Text Columns
In a similar way, you can use this method to resize the width of any text columns by placing the cursor on its right border as shown below and double-clicking the mouse when the double arrow cursor shape appears:

Revision as of 17:42, 14 January 2021

Overview

On occasion swimlane level cell and text column cells may contain text strings or values that are too wide to clearly fit in the horizontal space available. Th1s may happen because the swimlane cell and text column cell widths are too narrow. More common, is the occurrence where source plan data fields imported into OnePager contain information that does not fit in the horizontal space available. Where these occurrences are known prior to creating a OnePager chart, you have the option in the Template Properties form to set the widths of swimlane cells and text column cells before a chart is created.

Additionally, once a chart is created, there are controls in the Chart Properties form for globally adjusting the widths of swimlane cells and text column cells after chart creation. Finally, there are manual editing techniques available to adjust these same swimlane cells and text column cells widths using your mouse in the Chart Editor.

This article covers the global adjustment of swimlane cells and text column cells widths using the controls in the Chart Properties form. Since the controls in the Template Properties form are exactly the same as those in the Chart Properties form, only the controls in the Chart Properties form are discussed. This article also covers how to adjust the widths of swimlane cells and text column cells in the Chart Editor.

Globally Adjusting the Width of Text Columns or Swimlane Levels

The Chart Properties form's Rows/Swimlanes tab's Swimlanes and Text Columns control groups have identical controls for adjusting swimlane cells and text column cells widths as shown here:

P70-12 8 1-(1)-7082020.png

Text Column Width Adjustment in the Chart Properties Form

Additionally, for your convenience, there is an identical text column cell width control provided in the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form for each of the five (5) text columns as shown below for the Left#3 text column:

P70-12 8 1-(2)-7082020.png

This control is useful when working with the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form where it might not be convenient to revert back to the Chart Properties form's Rows/Swimlanes tab.

Swimlane Level Cell Width Adjustment in the Chart Properties Form

Again, for your convenience, there is an identical swimlane level cell width control provided in the Swimlane Formatting - Left#n form for each of the three (3) swimlane levels as shown below for the Left#3 text column:

P70-12 8 1-(3)-7082020.png

In a fashion identical to the control in the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form, this control is useful when working with the Swimlane Formatting - Left#n form where it might not be convenient to revert back to the Chart Properties form's Rows/Swimlanes tab.

Examples

The chart below is configured with each swimlane level cell and each text column cell set to width 0.95 to show how their contents look in a narrow horizontal space:

P70-12 8 1-(4)-7082020.png

In the illustration above, two of the swimlane levels and the single text column appear to have crowded labels.

Changing Swimlane Level Cell Widths - Example

This can be remedied in the Chart Properties form for the Left#2 and Left#3 swimlane level cells by using the Width control to increase the value to 1.50 as shown below:

P70-12 8 1-(5)-7082020.png

In a similar manner the width of the Left#3 swimlane level cells are increased from 0.95 to 1.50 as shown here:

P70-12 8 1-(6)-7082020.png

Changing Text Column Widths - Example

Changing the crowded condition of the Left#3 text column cells follows similar steps involving the Width control found in the Text Columns controls group as shown below:

P70-12 8 1-(7)-7082020.png

The illustration above show that it was necessary to increase all the Left#3 text column cells because the contents of the source plan's Name field for each imported task required more horizontal space so the width was increased to 3.00. The same results can be achieve if, in each of the examples above, the Text-Column Formatting - Left#n form or the Swimlanes Formatting - Left#n form is used and their respective Width control values are changed.

Resizing the Width of Text Columns and Swimlane Levels Using Drag and Drop

If you need more horizontal space for the content in your text columns or swimlane levels, you can resize them using drag and drop techniques with your mouse. To do this, hover your mouse over the vertical edge of the target text column or swimlane level cells until the double-arrow cursor appears, then left-click the mouse as shown below for the Left#3 text column:

P70-12 8 1-(8)-07092020.png

With the left-click button held down, drag the double-arrow cursor to the left or right as needed to widen or make the text column narrower as shown below where the Left#3 text column is widened:

P70-12 8 1-(9)-07092020.png

When the double-arrow cursor is dragged to the desired position, release the left-click button and the selected text column's width is changed as shown below:

P70-12 8 1-(10)-07092020.png

As shown in the illustration above, as long as the mouse cursor is hovering over a text column or swimlane level vertical boundary the mouse cursor retains the double-arrow shape. As you resize the cell's width, the size of your overall OnePager chart is adjusted accordingly.

Note that there can be an impact on the output media formatting for multi-page charts.

Resizing the Width of Text Columns and Swimlane Levels Using the Double-Click Method

You can quickly resize the width of a text column or swimlane level by positioning the mouse cursor on the right border of the text column or swimlane level and performing a double left-click with the mouse when the double-arrow cursor shape appears.

Suppose we have the chart shown below where the swimlane level cell contents and text column content are crowded and you want to resize these columns so that the contents fits without changing the text font as shown below:

P70-12 8 1-(11)-07092020.png

Automatically Resizing the Width of Swimlane Levels

To automatically resize the width of a swimlane level, place the cursor on the right border of the swimlane level and double-click when the double arrow cursor shape appears. The result is shown below for the Left#2 swimlane level:

P70-12 8 1-(12-1)-01132021.png

The double-click tells OnePager to examine all the swimlane level cells and make the width of the selected swimlane level adequate to display the contents of all swimlane level cells in the selected swimlane level as shown above. When this same method is applied to the Left#3 swimlane level in the above chart, the results look like this:

P70-12 8 1-(13-1)-01132021.png

Automatically Resize the Width of Text Columns

In a similar way, you can use this method to resize the width of any text columns by placing the cursor on its right border as shown below and double-clicking the mouse when the double arrow cursor shape appears:
