About Decorations
OnePager project views and snapshots let you create schedule graphs for specific audiences and show them how the project is changing over time. Each project view is a subset of the tasks in a Microsoft Excel source plan that you specified with a Flag field. For each project view, you can import different versions of its schedule to keep track of how those tasks and milestones change over time. You store each version of the schedule as a separate snapshot and give it a unique snapshot date in the past, present, or future. Each project view saves your presentation colors, row and swimlane assignments, font sizes, titles, and legends so that you do not have to re-edit the graphics every time the project changes. A simple relationship between a Microsoft Excel source plan (Project A), project views created from that Microsoft Excel source plan using different Flag settings, and snapshots is shown in the figure below:

Using a Single Microsoft Excel Plan throughout a Project Period
+
Task bar name labels are not considered a Decoration for the purpose of this discussion.

The following discussion, based on the figure above, assumes that you have one Microsoft Excel source plan, with a single plan name (Project A), that is used to manage the project. This one Microsoft Excel source plan is updated periodically, say, from week to week, but saved using the same Microsoft Excel source plan name (Project A) from the beginning of the project to the end.
+
For more information on Managing task bar/milestone symbols and task bar name labels, please see the articles at: Manual Editing Task/Milestone Shapes and Text Labels (Portal)

This being the first example scenario, the figure above shows the single Microsoft Excel source plan from which three project views were created using different flag fields, ShowIT1 for executive views, ShowIT2 for project team view, and ShowIT3 for customer views. Further, for the ShowIT1 project view there exist three snapshots taken from the Microsoft Excel source plan on 6/1/18, 7/1/18, and 8/2/18, respectively. Each snapshot represents the project view (under the control of ShowIT1 in this case) at each of these three dates during the course of the project. The same dates or different dates are used to create snapshots, in the example, for all three project views associated with Project A. This doesn’t need to be the case because snapshots can be taken at any time for any Flag field available and OnePager retains them, make them available for subsequent viewing, and allow updates as needed

The following statements summarize project views and snapshots and are provided to assist you in understanding how OnePager supports this project management scheduling, control, and reporting scenario:
+
Global Decoration Controls
1) A project view is a set of tasks and milestones for an intended audience.
+
Decorations are controlled through the Template Properties and Chart Properties forms. For more information on Using the Template Properties form, please see the article at: Managing Templates (Portal)

2) Usually a project view is associated with a specific Flag field in a specifically named Microsoft Excel source plan.
+
For more information on Using Chart Properties form, please see the article at: Editing with the Chart Properties form (Portal)

3) The project view also saves the colors, text positions, font sizes, and row and swimlane assignments of the tasks/milestones, plus the title, legend, header/footer elements, and background colors. This means you never have to re-enter this graphical information when dates change in the project.
+
For the purpose of this discussion, focus is placed on the Chart Properties form's Task Bars and Milestones tabs in the control groups as shown below:

4) Making and updating project views is the primary activity that you want OnePager to do!

+

5) A snapshot is a how the tasks and milestones in a project view looked on a specific snapshot date (a.k.a. status date or version date).
+

+

6) When you import updated schedules from a Microsoft Excel source plan, you must specify a unique snapshot date for the imported data unless you want to replace the data for an existing snapshot.
+
This article overviews instructions on two methods for manually editing decorations for individual task barss/milestone symbols. The two (2) sub-sections below, we’ll briefly cover both methods:

7) What changes snapshot to snapshot depends on what changed in the Microsoft Excel source plan. Typically snapshots vary because of changes to start and finish dates, baseline start and finish dates, percent complete and milestone completions.
+

Using Multiple Microsoft Excel Source Plans throughout a Project Period
+
:2) the Format… commands available to modify the decoration properties of a single task bar/milestone symbol.

Another typical project schedule source plan management scenario with Microsoft Excel is to create a Microsoft Excel source plan at the beginning of a project and save the updated source plan with a unique file name after each update/status recording period. Under this scenario project views and snapshots can still be created and maintained as with the first scenario discussed earlier.
+
Using the Chart Properties Form To Edit Decorations
The following steps correspond with the example in the figure below:
+
Decorations on all task bars/milestone symbols can be manually edited by using the Task Bars or Milestones tabs in the Chart Properties form. Using these controls you can edit the decoration properties in the current chart without changing any of the settings in the current Template Properties form. Doing so makes mavericks of all task bars/milestone symbols participating in the edit in the current chart.

1) Create Microsoft Excel source plan Project A-6/1/2018 with populated Flag fields ShowIT1, ShowIT2, ShowIT2, and save it.
+
Mirror Format Settings Between Task Bars and Milestones
2) Launch OnePager using each of the Flag fields to control the task selection and save the corresponding project views. In the first launch on 6/1/2018 the snapshot dates is set to 6/1/2018.
+
For convenience, we've added a checkbox titled Mirror format setting between task bars and milestones shown below:

3) On the next update of the Microsoft Excel source plan, save the updated plan as Project A-7/20/2018.
+

+

4) Launch OnePager in UPDATE existing Project View mode selecting the appropriate project view name. Set the snapshot date for the date of the snapshot (e.g., 7/20/2018) and create the snapshot. OnePager stores the snapshot for 7/20/2018 with the named project view. Repeat this process for each of the two remaining Flag field instances.
+
When this checkbox is checked ON, OnePager automatically makes any edits to Milestone symbols that are made to Task Bars for all settings where a blue dot appears to the right of the setting. This checkbox appears in both the Task Bar tab and the Milestones tab of the Chart Properties form and the corresponding tabs of the Template Properties form. The Milestones tab of the Chart Properties form is illustrated below:

5) After three iterations, there are three project views and nine synchronized snapshots available for use in presentations. There are three corresponding Microsoft Excel source plans for the status dates, 6/1/2018 through 8/2/2018.

Unlike Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel does not create unique Task IDs. Rather it is up to you to create a Task ID column and populate it with unique Task ID’s so that OnePager Express (OPX) can uniquely identify these rows in future updates. When creating a project view from multiple Microsoft Excel source plans OPX relies on these unique Task ID fields that you provide. Task ID field contents must be unique across the multiple Microsoft Excel source plans you expect to incorporate into a single project view. If the multiple Microsoft Excel source plans do not contain a Task ID field or the contents are not unique, the update process in OPX can lead to unexpected results when you insert or remove rows from any of the Microsoft Excel source plans involved.

About Decorations

Decorations on task bars/milestone symbols include the following Data-Driven elements:

 • Date labels
 • Percent complete
 • Baselines
 • Critical path
 • Deadlines
 • Endpoints

Task bar name labels are not considered a Decoration for the purpose of this discussion.

For more information on Managing task bar/milestone symbols and task bar name labels, please see the articles at: Manual Editing Task/Milestone Shapes and Text Labels (Portal)

Global Decoration Controls

Decorations are controlled through the Template Properties and Chart Properties forms. For more information on Using the Template Properties form, please see the article at: Managing Templates (Portal)

For more information on Using Chart Properties form, please see the article at: Editing with the Chart Properties form (Portal)

For the purpose of this discussion, focus is placed on the Chart Properties form's Task Bars and Milestones tabs in the control groups as shown below:

Template Properties Form - Task Bars Tab

This article overviews instructions on two methods for manually editing decorations for individual task barss/milestone symbols. The two (2) sub-sections below, we’ll briefly cover both methods:

1) Using the Chart Properties form to change all task bars/milestone symbol decoration properties, and
2) the Format… commands available to modify the decoration properties of a single task bar/milestone symbol.

Using the Chart Properties Form To Edit Decorations

Decorations on all task bars/milestone symbols can be manually edited by using the Task Bars or Milestones tabs in the Chart Properties form. Using these controls you can edit the decoration properties in the current chart without changing any of the settings in the current Template Properties form. Doing so makes mavericks of all task bars/milestone symbols participating in the edit in the current chart.

Mirror Format Settings Between Task Bars and Milestones

For convenience, we've added a checkbox titled Mirror format setting between task bars and milestones shown below:

P70-10 0 1-(3)-06012020.png

When this checkbox is checked ON, OnePager automatically makes any edits to Milestone symbols that are made to Task Bars for all settings where a blue dot appears to the right of the setting. This checkbox appears in both the Task Bar tab and the Milestones tab of the Chart Properties form and the corresponding tabs of the Template Properties form. The Milestones tab of the Chart Properties form is illustrated below:

P70-10 0 1-(4)-06012020.png

Task Bar and Milestones fill colors are always mirrored regardless of the Mirror... checkbox being checked ON or OFF. Instructions for editing specific decorations for OnePager Pro and Express are located at the links shown in the next section below:

Editing Individual Task Bar/Milestone Symbol Decorations in the Chart Editor

Decorations can be edited for individual task bars and milestone symbols (or selected groups of them) using the Change Task/Milestone Properties form. This form is accessed in two ways:

Right-Clicking a Task Bar/Milestone Symbol or Task Bar Name Label

Accessing the Change Task/Milestone Properties form with this method requires you to right-click on the task bar or milestone symbol or the task bar name label to access the right-click context menu for either. This action accesses the available commands in the right-click context menu when a task bar is right-clicked as shown below:

P70-10 0 1-(5)-06012020.png

The Format... command can also be accessed by right-clicking a task bar's name label as shown here:

P70-10 0 1-(5A)-06012020.png

Either way the Format... command is accessed in a right-click context menu, clicking the Format… command accesses the Change Task/Milestone Properties form as shown here:
