Changing Individual Task/Milestone Shape Colors

1) The ability to use color to represent various kinds of information about a task or milestone in OnePager is a powerful communications tool.

2) When you manually change the color of a task/milestone you are creating a color maverick.

Changing Colors using the Ribbon

3) The easiest way to change a color is to select one or more tasks/milestones.

4) Then use the color-changer (paint bucket icon) control shown below:

File:P70-9 2-1-70-(1)-06172019.png
P70-9_2-1-70-(1)-06172019.png

5) Clicking the paint bucket control shown above accesses the Color Chooser form from which you can select an alternative color for the selected tasks/milestones.

6) For more information Selecting task/milestone shapes and text labels, please see the article at Selecting Task/Milestone Shapes and Text Labels 9.1.1-70),

Changing Colors Using the Format Selection

7) You can also right click on a task/milestone shape to change colors.

8) Right clicking any selected task/milestone shape accesses a shortcut context menu that looks like this:

File:P70-9 2-1-70-(2)-06172019.png
P70-9_2-1-70-(2)-06172019.png

9) The color and other controls pertaining to tasks/milestones are contained in the Format… command shown above.

10) When click the Format... command, the Change Task/Milestone Properties form is accessed as shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(3)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(3)-06172019.png

11) Click the Color dropdown button which brings up the Color Chooser form shown here:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(4)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(4)-06172019.png

12) Selecting the new color resets the color shown in the Color window of the Change Task/Milestone Properties form.

13) Or, if you want to use a color that is not shown, click the More colors… button to bring up the standard Microsoft Color-definition form:

P70-9 2 1-70-(5)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(5)-06172019.png

14) After selecting an existing or newly defined color in this manner, all the selected task/milestone shapes now have the new color.

14) Once you are satisfied with the color of the selected tasks/milestones, click in any blank space in the graph area to deselect all selected tasks/milestones.

Using a Different Color Palette

16) To have a larger set of colors to choose from, you can switch among several predefined color palettes of 24 colors each or you can create your own custom color palettes.

17) Whenever you are changing the color of a task/milestone shape, you can always choose to select the new color from any of the existing color palettes.

18) To do this, click the paint bucket’s dropdown tab on the Home tab which accesses the Color Chooser form.

19) From this point, click the Choose color from palette: dropdown list and a selection of other color palettes is accessed as shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(6)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(6)-06172019.png

Using the No Fill Option of the Color Chooser on Task/Milestone Fill Colors

20) In addition to the various colors available and color palettes available, the No Fill option in the Color Chooser form enables you to remove all color and leave the task or milestone as a transparent shape with a border.

Turning On the No Fill Checkbox

21) For example, the portion of the chart shown below has one task selected with a right click using the Format… command. Further, selecting the Color dropdown button reveals the Color Chooser form. Note the No Fill checkbox shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(7)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(7)-06172019.png

22) Checking the No Fill checkbox and clicking OK in the Change Task/Milestone Properties form removes the color and display the selected task as shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(8)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(8)-06172019.png

23) Since a color changed for a task shape, OnePager also adds a legend item reflecting the no fill pattern for the task.

24) Manual legend item text update of this added legend item is recommended.

25) The feature shown above yields the best results when the task shape’s fill pattern is originally flat and the background color for the chart is solid.

26) Reversing the process and unchecking the No Fill checkbox requires you to select a color before the Color Chooser form closes and display the selected task in the selected color.

27) This option is useful when using Deadlines or Endpoints and you want to put emphasis on those decorations as opposed to the task shape graphic itself.

Changing Individual Task/Milestone Shapes

1) To change the shape (i.e. the specific symbol) of an individual task or milestone, select the task/milestone by right clicking and select the Format… command.

2) When the Change Task/Milestone Properties form is accessed, click the Shapes dropdown. This show the shape choices as shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(9)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(9)-06172019.png

3) As an alternative, after you select the desired task or milestone shape, click the Format… button on the Home tab as shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(10)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(10)-06172019.png

4) Clicking the Format… button also brings up the Change Task/Milestone Properties form.

5) If you want to change the shape of the selected task to something different from a rectangle, go ahead and select the desired shape from the dropdown menu.

6) If you select the double pointed rectangle as shown below, when you click OK the selected task shape looks like this:

P70-9 2 1-70-(11)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(11)-06172019.png

7) If multiple task/milestone shapes are selected, the desired shape change is applied to all selected task/milestone shapes.

8) When you manually change the shape for one or more selected tasks/milestones, you are creating a shape maverick.

9) If you wish to change the global default shape of all task/milestone shapes in the chart (as opposed to making shape mavericks) please see one of the following article:

Editing with the Chart Properties form (Portal) 21.0.1-70

Changing Individual Task/Milestone Shape Fill Patterns

1) To change the fill pattern of an individual task/milestone shape, select the task/milestone shape with a right click and select the Format… command.

2) When the Change Task/Milestone Properties form is accessed, click the Fills dropdown button.

3) This fill pattern choices are shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(12)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(12)-06172019.png

4) If we apply a different Fill pattern to the selected task shape as in the example above, the selected task shape might look like this:

P70-9 2 1-70-(13)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(13)-06172019.png
5) As discussed above, you can access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form by clicking the Format… button.

6) If multiple tasks/milestones shapes are selected, the desired fill pattern change is applied to all selected task/milestone shapes.

7) When you change the fill pattern of a selected task or tasks, you are creating a fill maverick.

8) If you wish to change the global default fill pattern for all task/milestone shapes in the chart (as opposed to making fill mavericks), please read this article: Editing with the Chart Properties form (Portal). 21.0.1-70

Changing Individual Task/Milestone Shape Borders

Changing Task/milestone Shape Borders

1) For both task and milestone shapes, you have control over three properties of the task/milestone shape’s borders:

a) color,
b) width, and
c) style.

2) To change the border properties of an individual task/milestone shape, select the task/milestone shape with a right click and select the Format… command.

3) When the Change Task/Milestone Properties form is accessed, go to the Borders group of controls on the right side of the form.

4) The control over border properties is shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(14)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(14)-06172019.png

5) If we apply the Dash-dot border style pattern to the selected task shape as well as change the border color to green and increase the border width to 5, the selected task shape looks like this:

P70-9 2 1-70-(15)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(15)-06172019.png

6) As discussed above, you can get to the Change Task/Milestone Properties form by clicking the Format… button.

7) If multiple task/milestone shapes are selected, the desired task/milestone shape's border property change is applied to all selected task/milestone shapes.

8) Changing the border properties of one or more selected task/milestone shapes creates a border maverick.

9) The initial border default setting is for the task/milestone shape's border to be the same color as the task/milestone shape's color, have a border width of one (1), and a border style of solid.

Using the No Border Option

10) OnePager can assign colors to the borders of task and milestone shapes other than specific colors.

11) This permits you to use the No Border feature in the Color Chooser for borders to eliminate the border.

12) Using the previous chart, you can do the following to hide the border with the No Border option as follows:

13) Below is a portion of a chart where we’ve increased the border width to 5 and changed the border color to black to accent the task/milestone shape's borders:

P70-9 2 1-70-(16)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(16)-06172019.png

14) Select the task/milestone shape with a right click and select the Format… command. This accesses the Change Task/Milestone Properties form where you see a Border Color dropdown button.

15) Click the Border Color dropdown button to reveal the Color Chooser form for borders as shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(17)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(17)-06172019.png

16) Checking the No Border checkbox then clicking OK eliminates the selected task/milestone shape’s border and with this result:

P70-9 2 1-70-(18)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(18)-06172019.png

17) The process can be easily reversed by unchecking the task/milestone shape’s No Border checkbox.

Changing the Task/Milestone Shape's Label Text

1) Since the method for selecting text labels changed in OnePager Pro and Express 7.0, it is strongly recommended that you read this article before proceeding further: Selecting Task/Milestone Shapes and Text Labels 9.1.1-70.

2) You can replace the imported task name from your Microsoft Project or Microsoft Excel source plan with a shorter or more descriptive text label without affecting the name in the original Microsoft Project or Microsoft Excel source plan.

3) To do this, just double left click the task/milestone shape which accesses the Enter text form.

4) Using the form, enter the desired text label in the box as shown below:

File:P70-9 2 1-70-(19)-06172019.png
P70-9_2_1-70-(19)-06172019.png

5) OnePager displays the new edited text label in all snapshots of the chart.

Changing the Height of Tasks/Milestone Shapes

1) By default the height of every task/milestone shape in the graph is set to an absolute height of 0.30 inches or centimeters.

2) You have the option to change the absolute height or to express task/milestone shape height as a percentage of row height.

3) Typically row height is set at 0.38 inches or centimeters as the default.

4) We strongly recommend that great care be taken when changing the height of individual task/milestone shapes or the height of all task/milestone shapes globally.

5) Individual task/milestone shape height controls are located in the Change Task/Milestone Properties form at its Format tab.

6) Accessing the form and the Format tab is discussed above.
