Hiding and Unhiding Task/Milestone Text Labels
1) Since the method for selecting task/milestone shape text labels changed in OnePager Pro and Express 7.0, it is strongly recommended that you read this article before proceeding further: Selecting Task/Milestone Shapes and Text Labels 9.1.1-70.
Hiding Text Labels Using the Home Ribbon Tab Label Position Dropdown
2) The easiest way to hide a text label is to select it with a left click. This action enables the Label Position controls on the Home ribbon tab.
3) Click the Label Position button to access the Label Position dropdown and click the Hide command as shown below:
4) At the completion of the operation, the chart looks like this:
5) Although the text label in the illustration above is hidden in the chart it can still be selected with the left click. Mousing around the task/milestone shape is a way to find the hidden text label as the mouse cursor changes to an arrow plus sign as shown below:
6) Performing a left click with the cursor in the arrow plus sign configuration highlights the text label border but the text label itself remains hidden as shown here:
7) When a hidden text label is selected in this manner the Label Position controls are enabled. It is possible to access the Label Position dropdown and to select one of the other options to re-position the hidden text label. For illustrative purposes, suppose the hidden text label, previously to the right of its associated task shape, needs to be put in a comment box.
- a) This can be done by assuring that the hidden text label is selected as described above.
- b) With the hidden text label selected, go to the Label Position button on the Home ribbon tab, access the dropdown, and click the In comment box option. The result is shown below after re-positioning the comment box:
2) You can hide one or more of the task/milestone text labels.
- a) To do this, make a selection in the Chart Editor by right-clicking one or more task/milestone text labels to access the the context menu shown here:
- b) Click the “Format…” command then navigate to the Task Labels tab as shown below:
- c) Uncheck the Show Task/Milestone label checkbox, shown above, to hide the selected task/milestone’s text label.
3) Alternatively, you can click the Hide option as shown below in the Label Position dropdown on the Home ribbon tab to hide the text label for the selected task/milestone shape.
4) If you have previously hidden the text label of any task/milestone shapes, you can make them visible again going back to the Task Labels tab of the Change Task/Milestone Properties form shown above and re-checking the Show task/milestone label checkbox. Or, you can click any text label option in the Label Position dropdown on the Home tab.
Hiding and Unhiding Tasks/Milestones Bars and Symbols
1) You can hide task/milestone shapes alone with its text label.
- a) To do this, select one or several task/milestone shapes with a right-click to access the context menu. Then click the Hide command in the context menu shown below:
- b) When the operation is complete the chart looks like this:
2) When tasks/milestone shapes and text labels with Task Links are hidden their associated Task Links are hidden as well.
3) If you have hidden some tasks/milestone shapes and text labels and want to make them all visible again, go to the Home ribbon’s Editing group and click the Show/Hide dropdown menu. Then, click the Show All Task/Milestones command as shown below:
4) When task/milestone text labels are hidden separate from their associated task/milestone shape, the Show All Task/Milestones command in the Show/Hide dropdown menu does NOT restore visibility to these hidden text labels.
- a) Separately hidden text labels can be restored by right-clicking on their visible task/milestone shape, accessing the context menu and clicking the Format... command to access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form at the Format tab.
- b) Once in the form, navigate to the Task Labels tab and recheck the Show task/milestone labels checkbox.
4) Unhiding task/milestone shapes with Task Links unhides the Task Links if the chart is set up to show Task Links.
Moving Tasks/Milestones to Different Rows
1) A lot of the power of OnePager comes from its efficient handling of space in the graph area. To manage vertical space, it is often very useful to move tasks/milestones so that several of them occupy the same row.
2) To do this, select one or multiple tasks or milestones. From here you can change row position assignments several ways:

3) Drag task/milestone shapes up or down to a new row position. Note that it is not possible to drag task/milestone shapes left or right. This prohibition is to protect the integrity of the data received from the Microsoft Project or Microsoft Excel source plan that provided the task/milestone’s original Start and Finish dates.
- a) To move any task/milestone shape from one row to another, first left-click the task/milestone shape to select it.
- b) With the left-click button held down, drag the selected task/milestone shape to the desired row as shown in the BEFORE and AFTER illustrations below:
- c) You can select several task/milestone shapes and drag them as a group to different rows. The multiple task/milestone shapes selected retain their relative positions when dragged up or down to different rows.
4) When moving task/milestone shapes to different rows their text labels may overlap with other text labels, other task/milestone shapes, or the edges of the graph. In the illustration below, the text label for the right most task/milestone shape in the gaining row was re-positioned to the right of the right most task for readability purposes as shown below:
5) Task/milestone shape and text label overlaps or collisions happen often enough such that OnePager Pro and Express 7.0 are enhanced with a new feature that automatically detects these text label collisions and provides several methods for avoiding them. Use the Arrow Keys
6) Move selected tasks/milestone shapes to new rows by using your keyboard’s up/down arrow keys. As noted above, you can move several task/milestone shapes at once using this method.
Changing the Representation of Tasks/Milestones
1) Task bars can also be represented as milestone either at their start date or finish date.
2) You can select the type of task representation globally (See the article at: Managing Templates (Portal)) 24.0.1-70 or on an individual task/milestone basis.
3) An individual task bar can be changed to a milestone by right-clicking the task and selecting Task representation command as shown below:
4) There are four (4) options available that can be applied to the selected task:
- (1) Selecting the Gantt bar option makes the selected task/milestone shape into a task bar.
- (2) Selecting the As milestone at finish option turns a selected task shape into a milestone shape positioned at the task shape’s finish date.
- (3) Selecting the As milestone at start option turns a selected task shape into a milestone shape positioned at the task shape’s start date.
- (4) Selecting the Use default option turns a selected task/milestone shape into the default type specified in the current Template Properties form in the Advanced Tab within the Task Representation group. See the illustration below.
5) You can also change task representation on the Home tab by clicking the item called Representation.
6) Changing the task representation of a selected task/milestone shape or set of task/milestone shapes creates what we refer to as representation maverick.

8) To make changes to a task/milestone shape representation use the following steps:
- a) Open the Chart Properties form and go to the Advanced tab as shown below:
- b) Individual task/milestone shape settings are overridden by the Task/Milestone threshold setting. This setting automatically converts short-duration task shapes into milestone shapes for easier reading.
- c) The default value for this setting is 2 days. This means that any task shapes with less than 2 days duration on the screen is automatically rendered as a milestone shape. To reduce this effect, increase the number (e.g. to 5 days).
Resizing the Height of Tasks/Milestones
1) OnePager provides the capability to change the height of a task/milestone shape by first selecting it and then dragging the grab box at the top or bottom of the selection task/milestone shape up or down, as shown below.
2) When the height is increased, both the top and bottom of the task/milestone shape expand. Conversely both the top and bottom of the task/milestone shape contract when you reduce the task/milestone shape’s height:

3) If you prefer to set a fixed height for a task/milestone shape instead of dragging it, right-click the task/milestone shape and choose the Format…. command. This shows the Change Task/Milestone Properties form, where you have the option to adjust the Height control:
- a) The Task Height controls, shown above, allow you to select whether you want the selected task/milestone shape’s height to be a percentage of the row height (recommended) or if you want the task/milestone shape’s height to be in terms of absolute height in inches or centimeters.
- b) The quantity in parentheses, (row height = 0.38) tells you the current height of the row that contains the task/milestone shape.
4) Changing the height of an individual task/milestone shape creates a height maverick.
5) Changing the height of an individual task/milestone shape does not change the height of the row containing the selected task/milestone shape.
