Order of Tasks/Milestones Decorations for Version 7.0

About Ordering Task/Milestones With Decorations

1) Editing the z-ordering for specific task/milestone shape decorations is useful when these decorations are overlaid in the chart by other graphics.

2) Decorations on task/milestone shapes are always drawn in the same z-order from back to front.

Standard Ordering of Decorations

3) This fixed ordering from back to front is given here:

a) Connectors in back (e.g., baseline to task/milestone shapes, endpoint shapes, and deadline connectors to task/milestone shapes)

b) Task/Milestone shapes

c) Baseline shapes

d) Endpoints/Deadline shapes

e) All text for task/milestone shapes, deadline shapes and endpoint shapes in front.

Editing the Ordering of Task/Milestones with Decorations

4) Editing the z-order for a task/milestone shape with decorations is done on an individual task/milestone shape basis.

5) That is, you must first select the task/milestone shape with a right-click to access the context menu as shown below:

Ordering Sub-Commands

6) The sub-menu for the Order command allows you to select any of these four sub-commands.

7) Bring to front. This option puts the task/milestone shape decorations in front of all other shapes in the chart area.

8) Send to back. This option puts the task/milestone shape decorations behind all other foreground shapes in the chart area (but not behind background shapes).

9) Bring forward. Selecting the Bring forward option steps the task/milestone shape decorations forward by one increment of Z-level. This is not very useful.

10) Send backward. This option steps the task/milestone shape decorations backward by one Z-level. This also is not very useful.

11) The action of the Order command applies to the task/milestone shape itself and all decorations associated with it including Task Links.

Example

1) Suppose we have a chart with Percent Complete decorations shown on some task/milestone shapes as shown below:

2) If the Engineering Team 2 Development task is moved up to overlay the ADONIS Subcontractor Selection Task the chart then looks like this:

3) If our goal, for the sake of this example, is to show the ADONIS Subcontractor Selection task with its Percent Complete decoration showing on top, we need to us the Order command's Send to back sub-command to do this as shown here:

4) When the operation above is complete, the chart looks like this:

5) The Order command is useful when it is necessary to orient task/milestone shapes with decorations when these task/milestone shapes overlay other graphics such as Comment Boxes or Curtains.
