Overview
+
Introduction
1) OnePager Pro is capable of importing separate source plans to create a multi-project chart from individual source plans.
+
This article is focused on using the Column Splitting feature with OnePager Bundle Standalone and imported Asana source plans.

2) In the article at: Making Multi-Project Charts from MS Project Integrated Master Schedules, <!--8.1.1-70--> the Microsoft Project Integrated Master Schedule feature is used to construct a multi-project source plan from which OnePager Pro (OPP) created a multi-project chart.
+
About Splitting and Parsing Fields
3) Suppose you want to build a multi-project chart without first creating a Microsoft Project Integrated Master Schedule (IMS).
+
The OnePager column splitting feature allows you to duplicate task bars when a task in your Asana source plan is assigned to multiple resources (or anything else).  Because assignments from Asana often are comma-delimited, this feature enables OnePager to parse the comma-delimited list and create a unique task bar for each instance in the comma-separated list.

4) To illustrate an approach to do this, we’ll use the OnePager Pro (OPP) Add-in application following the steps described in the remainder of this article.
+
Split Resource Names Example
Setting Up Steps
+
Say you want to use color-codes on task bars/milestone symbols based upon your Asana source plan’s Assigned to column as shown below:

Settings for Microsoft Project
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(1)-11022023.png</center>

1) OnePager Pro (OPP) uses the labels of the project-summary task to identify each project in a multi-project chart.
+
Some of the entries in the Assigned to column consist of multiple, comma-separated items and some tasks only used one resource.  Without the column splitting feature, a chart created from these data and assigned task bar/milestone symbol colors based upon the Assigned to column looks like this:

2) OnePager does not use the Microsoft Project source plan file name to identify projects.
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(5)-11272023.png</center>

3) If you want to display the project summary task at the top of a Microsoft Project file, go to the File tab on Microsoft Project’s ribbon tool bar.
+
OnePager, in this case, treats the entire string as an individual Assigned to value.  To provide more flexibility in displaying task bars that have multiple resources assigned, OnePager supports the concept of a column splitting.  This feature recognizes comma-separated values in a designated column and creates a separate task bar for each of the comma-separated values.

4)Then navigate to Options tab and once there, to the Advanced tab and check the checkbox ON that is shown below:
+
Enabling Splitting
<center></center>
+
To use this feature requires turning ON the feature in the Asana Template Properties form you intend to use to make the chart.  The setting must be turned ON before the chart is created so launch OnePager Bundle from the desktop icon, click the NEW button on the OnePager Bundle Start form to access the OnePager choices form, select your Asana source plan, and type in the chart's title as shown here:
<!--<center>P70-8_2_1-70-(0)-08282019.png</center>-->
+

5) When you are using the Pull operation workflow to create a multi-project chart, the setting above on the Microsoft Project’s Project Options page must be set before the first designated Microsoft Project source plan is pulled in and must stay set for all subsequent source plan Pull operations.
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2A)-11022023.png</center>

6) This is because, although Microsoft Project, as an application, does not appear on your screen anytime during the Pull operation, nevertheless, it is launched by OPP and operates on the designated files before OPP processes them.
+
When you click the Next> button at the bottom of the form, OnePager accesses the second page of the OnePager choices form shown below:

7) The setting for Microsoft Project discussed above does not need to be switched ON when Push operational workflows are being used.
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2AA)-11022023.png</center>

Predatory Steps
+
Clicking the Edit current template button accesses the current Template Properties form.  Navigate to the Field Mappings tab on the form, check the Enable splitting on: checkbox to ON and (in this example) select the Assigned To column from the dropdown list provided.  The results are shown here:

8) Before proceeding with the construction of a OnePager Pro multi-project chart, the first step is to assure that the Template Properties form used is for Single Project Gantt Chart - Detailed.
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2AAA)-11022023.png</center>

9) This is because OnePager Pro is going to import two or more source plans and use them to construct the desired chart.
+
Click the Save and use button to complete the process and close the current Template Properties form returning you to the second page of the OnePager choices form show above.

10) Further, since each Microsoft Project source plan contains its own UniqueID sequence and since these UniqueID values may be duplicates from one source plan to the next, we need to make OnePager Pro aware that it must safely combine tasks from different source plans.
+
Split Resources in the Chart
11) These steps are described below:
+
Clicking the Create new chart button completes the process and creates the chart with the column splitting feature in use.  The chart with splitting looks like this:

Modifying the OnePager Pro Template Properties Form for Creating Multi-Project Charts
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2)-11022023.png</center>

12) Launch Microsoft Project and navigate to the Add-ins tab on the Microsoft Project ribbon tool bar.
+
In the chart with column splitting shown above, there are now several more task bars in the Chart Editor than there were before.  The task bar for Plate Movement is now split into two (2) separate task bars, one for each of the two resources assigned.  The task bar for Centrifugal Barrier is now split into three (3) separate task bars, one for each of the three resources that were assigned to this task in the Asana source plan.  Each of the resources has a unique color assigned.  Each of the resources appears by itself in the Legend.  The Legend title shows the column name that is used for splitting the columns.

13) Click the Template button which accesses the current Template Properties form.
+
With this feature, you can use column splitting just like any other column by using the dropdowns in the Template Properties form or Chart Properties form to assign colors, highlight task bars and milestone symbols, and to define and label rows and swimlanes.

14) Assure that the Template Properties form type is Single Project Gantt Chart - Detailed or a Template Properties form of your own that is equivalent as used in this example shown below:
+
Splitting Resources and Task Links
<center></center>
+
When task bars with Data-Driven or manual Task Links are split, the Task Links (Data-Driven and manual) are not shown.  Further, the Task Links that are now hidden and do not have entries in the Where are My Links? form.
<!--<center>P70-8_2_1-(1)-05132020.png</center>-->
+

+
15) At the Advanced tab, check the Safely combine tasks from different files checkbox ON as shown above.
+

+
16) This setting allows you to import multiple standalone Microsoft Project source plans.
+

+
17) If you do not check this checkbox ON, OnePager may confuse tasks from one Microsoft Project source plan with tasks from another when the tasks have the same UniqueID.
+

+
Making Adjustments to Rows and Swimlanes
+

+
18) With the Template Properties form used previously, go to the Template Properties form’s Rows/Swimlanes tab shown below.
+

+
19) Ensure that you are grouping and labeling the swimlane level by the Project Name.
+

+
20) This step is optional, it is strongly recommended.
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>P70-8_2_1-(2)-05132020.png</center>-->
+

+
21) Now click the Save and use or Use button to make this Template Properties form the current Template Properties form to support creating a multi-project chart.
+

+
22) Once you’ve saved the Template Properties form, the next series of steps below involve accessing the separate Microsoft Project source plans that we intend to use for our multi-project chart.
+

+
Load the First Microsoft Project Source Plan
+

+
23) With Microsoft Project already launched, use the Files controls in Microsoft Project to load the first Microsoft Project source plan as shown here:

+
<!--<center>P70-8_2_1-(3)-05132020.png</center>-->
+

+
24) When you click the Open button on the form above, Microsoft Project loads the source plan in the normal manner.
+

+
25)  With the first source plan loaded, navigate to the Microsoft Project Add-ins tab and click the OnePager Pro button to launch OnePager and access the OnePager Start form.
+

+
26) Now click the NEW button on the OnePager Start form to access the OnePager choices (OPC) form as shown here:

+
<!--<center>P70-8_2_1-70-(4)-08282019.png</center>-->
+

+
27) In the illustration above, OnePager Pro already knows the name of the first source plan.
+

+
28) Complete the remainder of the fields in the OPC form such as the Title of New Chart and the Snapshot Date if applicable.
+

+
29) To add the remaining two (2) source plans used in this example, it is necessary to create a source package assuring that all three source plans are included.
+

+
30) To do this click on the Add/Remove button near the top of the OPC form.

1) Eventually there is a need to update your multi-project chart by either adding a snapshot or replacing a snapshot with updated data.
+

+
2) To perform either the add or the replace snapshot operation, the processes described in the article at: REPLACING a Snapshot via Pull Operation - OnePager Pro <!--7.14.1-70-->
+

+
3) The key to updating multi-project charts is the proper management of the source packet.
+

+
4) Recall that the source packet contains the file or files that are to be used to either create or update a chart.
+

+
5) They are stored as file names and path names in the chart’s .TAM file and can be accessed from the OnePager Data ribbon tool bar tab’s Selected file(s) button as shown below:

Introduction

This article is focused on using the Column Splitting feature with OnePager Bundle Standalone and imported Asana source plans.

About Splitting and Parsing Fields

The OnePager column splitting feature allows you to duplicate task bars when a task in your Asana source plan is assigned to multiple resources (or anything else). Because assignments from Asana often are comma-delimited, this feature enables OnePager to parse the comma-delimited list and create a unique task bar for each instance in the comma-separated list.

Split Resource Names Example

Say you want to use color-codes on task bars/milestone symbols based upon your Asana source plan’s Assigned to column as shown below:

P72-24 5 3-72-(1)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(1)-11022023.png

Some of the entries in the Assigned to column consist of multiple, comma-separated items and some tasks only used one resource. Without the column splitting feature, a chart created from these data and assigned task bar/milestone symbol colors based upon the Assigned to column looks like this:

P72-24 5 3-72-(5)-11272023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(5)-11272023.png

OnePager, in this case, treats the entire string as an individual Assigned to value. To provide more flexibility in displaying task bars that have multiple resources assigned, OnePager supports the concept of a column splitting. This feature recognizes comma-separated values in a designated column and creates a separate task bar for each of the comma-separated values.

Enabling Splitting

To use this feature requires turning ON the feature in the Asana Template Properties form you intend to use to make the chart. The setting must be turned ON before the chart is created so launch OnePager Bundle from the desktop icon, click the NEW button on the OnePager Bundle Start form to access the OnePager choices form, select your Asana source plan, and type in the chart's title as shown here:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2A)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2A)-11022023.png

When you click the Next> button at the bottom of the form, OnePager accesses the second page of the OnePager choices form shown below:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2AA)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2AA)-11022023.png

Clicking the Edit current template button accesses the current Template Properties form. Navigate to the Field Mappings tab on the form, check the Enable splitting on: checkbox to ON and (in this example) select the Assigned To column from the dropdown list provided. The results are shown here:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2AAA)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2AAA)-11022023.png

Click the Save and use button to complete the process and close the current Template Properties form returning you to the second page of the OnePager choices form show above.

Split Resources in the Chart

Clicking the Create new chart button completes the process and creates the chart with the column splitting feature in use. The chart with splitting looks like this:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2)-11022023.png

In the chart with column splitting shown above, there are now several more task bars in the Chart Editor than there were before. The task bar for Plate Movement is now split into two (2) separate task bars, one for each of the two resources assigned. The task bar for Centrifugal Barrier is now split into three (3) separate task bars, one for each of the three resources that were assigned to this task in the Asana source plan. Each of the resources has a unique color assigned. Each of the resources appears by itself in the Legend. The Legend title shows the column name that is used for splitting the columns.

With this feature, you can use column splitting just like any other column by using the dropdowns in the Template Properties form or Chart Properties form to assign colors, highlight task bars and milestone symbols, and to define and label rows and swimlanes.

Splitting Resources and Task Links

When task bars with Data-Driven or manual Task Links are split, the Task Links (Data-Driven and manual) are not shown. Further, the Task Links that are now hidden and do not have entries in the Where are My Links? form.
