Introduction
Projects, Microsoft Excel source plans, and charts have Start/Finish Dates.  Task bars and milestone symbols have Start/End Dates.  The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to manage the Start/Finish Dates for a OnePager Express chart.
+
This article is focused on using the Column Splitting feature with OnePager Bundle Standalone and imported Asana source plans.

Start/Finish Dates can be set and edited from your Microsoft Excel source plans where OnePager Express examines the earliest task bar/milestone symbol Start Date and the latest task bar/milestone symbol End Date to establish the Start/Finish Date boundaries for the new or updated charts.  The exact Start/Finish Dates for the chart are determined by the rules just stated but modified to dates that correspond to the first and last full Tic Unit shown in the Lowest Level Time Axis.  Start/Finish Dates can also be set using the Start/Finish Date control settings in your OnePager Express Template Properties form Time Axis tab’s Calendar sub-tab in the Date Boundaries control group before a chart is created as shown here:

The OnePager column splitting feature allows you to duplicate task bars when a task in your Asana source plan is assigned to multiple resources (or anything else). Because assignments from Asana often are comma-delimited, this feature enables OnePager to parse the comma-delimited list and create a unique task bar for each instance in the comma-separated list.

Finally, there are Start/Finish Date control settings you edit after a chart is created in the OnePager Express View ribbon tool bar task in the Dates control group highlighted below:

Some of the entries in the Assigned to column consist of multiple, comma-separated items and some tasks only used one resource. Without the column splitting feature, a chart created from these data and assigned task bar/milestone symbol colors based upon the Assigned to column looks like this:

Editing Template Form Start/Finish Date Settings
+
OnePager, in this case, treats the entire string as an individual Assigned to value.  To provide more flexibility in displaying task bars that have multiple resources assigned, OnePager supports the concept of a column splitting.  This feature recognizes comma-separated values in a designated column and creates a separate task bar for each of the comma-separated values.

OnePager provides the capability for you to preset the Start/Finish Date boundaries for subsequently created chart before any charts are created.
+
Enabling Splitting
Use System Generated Start/Finish Dates
+
To use this feature requires turning ON the feature in the Asana Template Properties form you intend to use to make the chart.  The setting must be turned ON before the chart is created so launch OnePager Bundle from the desktop icon, click the NEW button on the OnePager Bundle Start form to access the OnePager choices form, select your Asana source plan, and type in the chart's title as shown here:

You have the option to establish a Template Properties form option that allows OnePager to establish the Start/Finish Dates for charts automatically. You can also override this option and establish your own Start/Finish Dates in the Template Properties form for permanent use with the Template. The default option, however, is to let OnePager determine the Start/Finish Date boundaries automatically through the software’s examination of the task bar/milestone symbol structure in your source plan.  OnePager Express distributed Template Properties form settings in the Time Axis tab Date Boundaries control group are that the Use system generated start/finish dates checkbox is checked ON as shown here:
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2A)-11022023.png</center>

<center></center>
+
When you click the Next> button at the bottom of the form, OnePager accesses the second page of the OnePager choices form shown below:
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(1)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

When the Use system generated start/finish dates checkbox is checked ON, the Template Properties form’s Start Date and Finish Date, shown above, are disabled. If you uncheck the Use system generated start/finish dates checkbox, setting it to OFF, the form’s Start Date and Finish Date windows are enabled and you can set your own desired Start and Finish Dates using the standard Calendar dropdown as shown below:
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2AA)-11022023.png</center>

<center></center>
+
Clicking the Edit current template button accesses the current Template Properties form.  Navigate to the Field Mappings tab on the form, check the Enable splitting on: checkbox to ON and (in this example) select the Assigned To column from the dropdown list provided. The results are shown here:
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(4)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

Resetting Start and Finish Dates in the Template Properties form requires that the Finish Date is later in the timeline than the Start Date setting.  If the Finish Date is earlier than the Start Date or vice versa, OnePager provides the warning message below when you attempt to click the Save and use button on the Chart Properties form:
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2AAA)-11022023.png</center>

<center></center>
+
Click the Save and use button to complete the process and close the current Template Properties form returning you to the second page of the OnePager choices form show above.
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(5)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

Clicking the OK button the above form returns you to the Template Properties form where you can make the correction.  Assuming the Start Date and Finish Dates are appropriately sequenced with the Use system generated start/finish dates checkbox unchecked (OFF), your settings are used by OnePager to establish the timespan for subsequent charts using the Template Properties form.
+
Split Resources in the Chart
Auto-Adjust Timeline Options
+
Clicking the Create new chart button completes the process and creates the chart with the column splitting feature in use.  The chart with splitting looks like this:

The Auto-adjust timeline dropdown in the Template Properties form Time Axis tab Date Boundaries control group is useful in managing Template Properties form created Start/Finish Dates. The Auto-adjust timeline dropdown option list is shown below:
+
<center></center>
 +
<center>P72-24_5_3-72-(2)-11022023.png</center>

<center></center>
+
In the chart with column splitting shown above, there are now several more task bars in the Chart Editor than there were before.  The task bar for Plate Movement is now split into two (2) separate task bars, one for each of the two resources assigned. The task bar for Centrifugal Barrier is now split into three (3) separate task bars, one for each of the three resources that were assigned to this task in the Asana source plan.  Each of the resources has a unique color assigned.  Each of the resources appears by itself in the Legend.  The Legend title shows the column name that is used for splitting the columns.
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(6)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

The dropdown menu lets you direct OnePager to automatically change the Start/Finish Date boundaries of the chart when it is re-opened or updated and finds that some task bars or milestone symbols lie outside the original Start/Finish Date boundaries.  The options are provided so that OnePager either asks you each time it finds this situation, always makes the change to Start/Finish Date boundaries, or never makes the change and proceeds with the previous Start/Finish Date boundaries. If you select the first option, Ask each time, OnePager displays the Message form below with the information you need to make one of the choices provided as shown in the example below:
+
With this feature, you can use column splitting just like any other column by using the dropdowns in the Template Properties form or Chart Properties form to assign colors, highlight task bars and milestone symbols, and to define and label rows and swimlanes.

+
Splitting Resources and Task Links
<center>&lt;X61-22_3_2-61-(6A)-10302018.png&gt;</center>
+

If you select the Always yes option, the default setting, OnePager automatically adjusts the Start/Finish Date boundaries for you and proceeds.  If you select Always no, OnePager does not adjust the Start/Finish Date boundaries if task bars or milestone symbols are outside the current boundaries and proceeds.  OnePager can also detect that the timeline needs to be shortened as well as lengthened.  OnePager under the Always yes option adjusts the Start/Finish Date boundaries of the chart to smallest Tic Unit on the Time Axis (rounded to the nearest whole Tic Unit).
+
When task bars with Data-Driven or manual Task Links are split, the Task Links (Data-Driven and manual) are not shown.  Further, the Task Links that are now hidden and do not have entries in the Where are My Links? form.

+
For example, if the smallest Tic Unit of the Time Axis is Months, OnePager sets the Start Date boundary at the first day of the Month and the Finish Date boundary to the last day of the Month.  If the Use system generated start/finish dates checkbox is unchecked or OFF in the Template Properties form, Time Axis tab’s Calendar sub-tab, OnePager ignores the Auto-adjust timeline options.
+

+
Other Considerations
+

+
Copying a chart to become a Template Properties does not fix the Start/Finish Date boundaries.  Any chart, whether created from a Template Properties form with fixed Start/Finish Date boundaries or not, becomes a Template Properties form with the Use system generated start/finish dates checkbox checked ON.
+

+
For more information on Managing the current Template, please see this section in the article at:  Making a Template Properties Form from a Chart <!--24.6.1-70-->
+

+
Any Template Properties form with fixed Start/Finish Date boundaries can only be modified with respect to editing the fixed Start/Finish Date boundaries by opening the Template Properties form, assuring that the Use system generated start/finish dates checkbox is checked OFF, and then setting the new Start/Finish Date boundaries after which the revised Template Properties form must be saved.  These Use system generated start/finish dates can always be edited once the chart is created by going to the Chart Properties form’s Time Axis tab’s Calendar sub-tab in the Date Boundaries control group where you can manually edit the Start Date and Finish Date boundaries for the chart as shown below:
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(7)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

+
All other controls on this sub-tab of the Template Properties form operate as described for the Chart Properties form’s Time Axis tab’s Calendar sub-tab.  Any settings edited in the Template Properties form Time Axis tab’s Calendar sub-tab in the Calendar Settings and Formatting & Layout control groups are populated into the Chart Properties form’s Time Axis tab’s Calendar sub-tab and its settings in the Calendar Settings and Formatting & Layout control groups.

Editing Chart Properties Form Start/Finish Date Settings
+

+
Start/Finish Date Settings
+

+
As mentioned above, initial Chart Properties form Time Axis tab, Date Boundaries control group settings are determined in one of three ways.  Typically, the Start/Finish Dates for the new chart are calculated from the task bar/milestone symbol data in the source plan.  Further, the Auto-adjust timeline default option in the Chart Properties form is set to the Always no option so that source plan data drive the first setting of the Start/Finish Date boundaries for the chart as in the example below:
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(3)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

+
Above, the Start Date is set to the start date of the first Quarter that the earliest task’s Start Date occupies and the Finish Date is set to the start date of the first Month following the End Date of the latest task shown in the chart as examples.
+

+
The Start and Finish Date portions of the chart are shown in portions below:
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(9)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

+
The Chart Properties form Time Axis tab Calendar sub-tab’s Date Boundaries control group can be used to edit the Start/Finish Date boundaries of the chart.  Access the Chart Properties form by clicking the Chart Properties button on the OnePager Express Home ribbon tool bar tab and navigate to the Time Axis tab where the current Start/Finish Date boundaries controls reside.  Next, click the Start Date dropdown and change the Start Date to 7/1/2018 as shown here:
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(10)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

+
When you click the Chart Properties form’s Apply or OK button, the chart’s Start Date boundary moves to the right as shown here:
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(11)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

+
The same set of steps can be used to edit the Finish Date boundary as well.  As with the discussion related to the Start/Finish Date boundaries in the Template Properties form, any attempt to set a Finish Date earlier than a Start Date or vice versa in the Chart Properties form’s Time Axis tab causes OnePager to issue the warning message like the one shown below:
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(12)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

+
Auto-Adjust Timeline Options in the Chart Properties Form
+

+
The Auto-adjust timeline dropdown options are relevant in situations where you are creating multiple snapshots or updating snapshots from your source plan where the source plan’s Start/Finish Date boundaries can change.  When a chart is first created, the Start/Finish Date boundary settings shown in the Chart Properties form are set in accordance with the associated controls in the Template Properties form.   After the chart is created, the settings for the Start/Finish Date boundaries are shown and the default setting for the Auto-adjust timeline is Always yes.  With this setting, OnePager automatically adjusts the timeline’s Start/Finish Date boundaries if, in a new snapshot or updated snapshot, the software detects that these dates are required to change in the chart.
+

+
If, after creating the chart, you use the Chart Properties form Time Axis tab Calendar sub-tab’s controls or the OnePager View ribbon tool bar tab controls to change either the Start Date or Finish Date, OnePager changes the default setting for the Auto-Adjust timeline to Always no.  This is done because you are taking control of the Start/Finish Date boundary settings and it is presumed that you want OnePager to no longer participate.  Of course, you do have the ability to change the Auto-adjust timeline option to Ask each time if you desire.
+

+
For more information on Auto-Adjust Timeline Options, please see this section in the article at:  Auto-Adjust Timeline Options <!--22.3.2-70-->

Editing Start/Finish Date Settings in the Chart
+

+
OnePager added a new control to the OnePager Express View ribbon tool bar tab as shown below:
+

+
<center></center>
+
<!--<center>X70-22_3_2-70-(2)-11172020.png</center>-->
+

+
After a chart is created or updated, you can edit either the Start or Finish Date boundary or both by using these two controls and their dropdown menu as illustrated here:
+

+
<center></center>

Introduction

This article is focused on using the Column Splitting feature with OnePager Bundle Standalone and imported Asana source plans.

About Splitting and Parsing Fields

The OnePager column splitting feature allows you to duplicate task bars when a task in your Asana source plan is assigned to multiple resources (or anything else). Because assignments from Asana often are comma-delimited, this feature enables OnePager to parse the comma-delimited list and create a unique task bar for each instance in the comma-separated list.

Split Resource Names Example

Say you want to use color-codes on task bars/milestone symbols based upon your Asana source plan’s Assigned to column as shown below:

P72-24 5 3-72-(1)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(1)-11022023.png

Some of the entries in the Assigned to column consist of multiple, comma-separated items and some tasks only used one resource. Without the column splitting feature, a chart created from these data and assigned task bar/milestone symbol colors based upon the Assigned to column looks like this:

P72-24 5 3-72-(5)-11272023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(5)-11272023.png

OnePager, in this case, treats the entire string as an individual Assigned to value. To provide more flexibility in displaying task bars that have multiple resources assigned, OnePager supports the concept of a column splitting. This feature recognizes comma-separated values in a designated column and creates a separate task bar for each of the comma-separated values.

Enabling Splitting

To use this feature requires turning ON the feature in the Asana Template Properties form you intend to use to make the chart. The setting must be turned ON before the chart is created so launch OnePager Bundle from the desktop icon, click the NEW button on the OnePager Bundle Start form to access the OnePager choices form, select your Asana source plan, and type in the chart's title as shown here:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2A)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2A)-11022023.png

When you click the Next> button at the bottom of the form, OnePager accesses the second page of the OnePager choices form shown below:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2AA)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2AA)-11022023.png

Clicking the Edit current template button accesses the current Template Properties form. Navigate to the Field Mappings tab on the form, check the Enable splitting on: checkbox to ON and (in this example) select the Assigned To column from the dropdown list provided. The results are shown here:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2AAA)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2AAA)-11022023.png

Click the Save and use button to complete the process and close the current Template Properties form returning you to the second page of the OnePager choices form show above.

Split Resources in the Chart

Clicking the Create new chart button completes the process and creates the chart with the column splitting feature in use. The chart with splitting looks like this:

P72-24 5 3-72-(2)-11022023.png
P72-24_5_3-72-(2)-11022023.png

In the chart with column splitting shown above, there are now several more task bars in the Chart Editor than there were before. The task bar for Plate Movement is now split into two (2) separate task bars, one for each of the two resources assigned. The task bar for Centrifugal Barrier is now split into three (3) separate task bars, one for each of the three resources that were assigned to this task in the Asana source plan. Each of the resources has a unique color assigned. Each of the resources appears by itself in the Legend. The Legend title shows the column name that is used for splitting the columns.

With this feature, you can use column splitting just like any other column by using the dropdowns in the Template Properties form or Chart Properties form to assign colors, highlight task bars and milestone symbols, and to define and label rows and swimlanes.
