New Task Bars, Milestone Symbols, and Name Label Selection Rules for OnePager 7.0

Overview

As part of the Smart Task/Milestone Text Labeling feature's implementation in OnePager 7.0, we changed the rules for task bar and name label manual left-click and right-click selection to facilitate the addition of The Smart Task/Milestone Text Labeling Feature.

Left-Click Selection Rules

To select a task bar in OnePager 7.0 you left-click the task bar itself. To select the task bar's name label left-click the name label only.

Right-Click Selection Rules

A right-click on a task bar/milestone symbol accesses a context menu with commands that are associated with edits to the task bar and the name label as shown below:

P70-0 4 2-70-(12A)-04272020.png
<P70-0_4_2-70-(12A)-04272020.png>

A right-click on a name label accesses a specific context menu with commands that are for edits to the name label as shown here:

P70-0 4 2-70-(12B)-04272020.png
<P70-0_4_2-70-(12B)-04272020.png>

Both right-click context menus have commands that allow the editing of name labels and for re-optimizing name labels in collision. When a set of task bars or milestone symbols and their associated name labels are in a name label collision situation, a right-click on the task bar or milestone symbol accesses the context menu augmented with a command to invoke the text label collision avoidance algorithm.

Select Associated Text

Since these new rules represents a change from previous versions of OnePager with respect to selecting task bars and their name labels, OnePager 7.0 provides an option for setting the behavior of task bar selection to that of previous versions. This option is controlled by a checkbox in the Advanced tab of the Template and Chart Properties forms in the Display options control group called Select associated text. The default setting in the checkbox is checked ON. Checking this checkbox ON changes the behavior of a left-click on a task bar or name label such that the left-click selects both the task bar or milestone symbol and the name label. Checking the Select associated text checkbox OFF, changes the behavior of a left-click on a task bar or milestone symbol so that the left-click selects the task bar or milestone symbol only. Left-clicking on a name label selects the name label only. Regardless of the setting in the Select associated text checkbox, there is no difference in how the right-click on a task bars or milestone symbols and/or name label operates. This option is controlled by a checkbox in the Advanced tab of the Template and Chart Properties forms in the Display options control group called Select associated text shown below:

Changes to Task Bars and Name Label Right-Click Context Menus

The changes to task bar and name label selection described above offers an opportunity to simplify the context menus associated with task/milestone shapes and text labels. The right-click on task bars or milestone symbols context menu contains commands available in previous versions of OnePager with the addition of a new command associated with the Smart Task/Milestone Text Labeling feature - the Re-optimize text collisions command. This new context menu command is explained in greater detail in the Wiki articles referenced below.

The right click on a text label has a simplified context menu of two commands that allows you to edit the text label name and to access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form at the Task Label tab as shown below:

As in previous OnePager versions this form allows you to turn the display of text labels On and Off, change their positions relative to their task/milestone shape, and change their font properties.

Selecting Task Bars versus Selecting Task Bar Name Labels

Editing task bars and task bar name labels changed in OnePager 7.0. In this context we are specifically addressing task bar or milestone symbol name text labels. With respect to left-click selection in OnePager 7.0, a left-click on the task bar or milestone symbol selects and highlights only the task bar or milestone symbol when the Select associated text checkbox is checked OFF.

A left-click on the name label selects and highlights only the name label when the Select associated text checkbox is checked OFF.

Right-clicking on the task bar or milestone symbol accesses the task bar context menu as shown below:

P70-0_4_2_3-70-(3)-04282020.png

Right-clicking on the task bar's name label accesses the name label context menu when the Select associated text checkbox is checked OFF as shown below:

P70-0_4_2_3-70-(4)-04282020.png

When the Select associated text checkbox is checked ON, left-clicking either the task bar or the name label selects both the task bar and the name label as shown here:

When the Select associated text checkbox is checked ON, right-clicking either the task bar or the name label accesses the applicable right-click context menu and shows the task bar or name label selected.

Making the Task Bar Left-Click Selection Select Both the Task Bar and Name Label in One Left-Click

As mentioned earlier in this article, OnePager 7.0 provides a control for you to change the response that a left-click on a task bar or milestone symbol allowing a single left-click on the task bar or milestone symbol to select both the task bar or milestone symbol and its corresponding name label. The control is called the Select associated text checkbox and is found in the Template Properties and Chart Properties form’s Advanced tab in the Display options control group as shown below for the Chart Properties form:

P70-0_4_2_3-70-(6-1)-08282020.png

If you mouse over this checkbox the following tool tip appears: When the task bar/milestone symbol is selected, also select all text associated with the shape, including the task name, dates, and percent complete labels. As with all tool tips they are provided to assist you in determining what the control basically does. As an example, the illustration below is a chart portion where there was a left-click on the task bar only when the Select associated text checkbox is checked OFF.

P70-0 4 2 3-70-(1)-04282020.png
P70-0_4_2_3-70-(1)-04282020.png

Left-clicking the task bar only selects the task bar as shown above. When the task bar or milestone symbol is selected in the above example, only the Icons on the Home ribbon tool bar tab that are applicable to editing task bars and milestone symbols are enabled. The enabled control groups are: Editing, Settings, Font, and Format. Even with the Select associated text checkbox checked OFF, left-clicks on the task bar still allow you to change Font properties but not name label position. You can change name label alignment if the name label is configured such that name label alignment changes are available. However, in the situation described above, where one or more task bars are left-clicked with the Select associated text checkbox checked OFF, you can right-click on any of the selected task bars to access the task bar right-click context menu. You can use all the commands in the context menu as well as all the tabs available in the Change Task/Milestone Properties form accessed from the Format… command in the context menu or the Format...Icon on the Home ribbon tool bar task as shown below:

P70-0 4 2 3-70-(7)-04282020.png
P70-0_4_2_3-70-(7)-04282020.png

To complete the example, the illustration below is a chart portion where the Select associated text checkbox is checked OFF, and the task bar/milestone symbol is selected with a left-click:

P70-0 4 2 3-70-(2)-04282020.png
P70-0_4_2_3-70-(2)-04282020.png

With the Select associated text checkbox checked OFF, a left-click on the task bar selects the task bar only as shown above. When the task bar is selected as in the above example, Most Icons on the Home ribbon tool bar tab that are applicable to editing task bars are enabled. The applicable control groups are: Editing, Settings, Font, and Format. The Alignment control group is only enabled if there is an option available to re-align the name label or name labels for selected items. Essentially, checking the Select associated text checkbox OFF makes the OnePager 7.0 behavior relative to left-clicking of task bars or name labels operate such that selection is separate for task bars and name labels. All associated commands operate as documented including gaining access to the Change Task/Milestone Properties form.

OnePager 7.0, regardless of the status of the Select associated text status of checked ON or checked OFF, permits you to right-click on any previously selected task bar or milestone symbol or name label and accesses any of the context menu commands.
