New Task/Milestone Shape and Text Label Selection Rules for OnePager 7.0 (0.4.2.3-70)

Overview

1) As part of the Smart Task/Milestone Text Labeling feature's implementation in OnePager 7.0, we changed the rules for task shape and text label manual left-click and right-click selection to facilitate the addition of The Smart Task/Milestone Text Label Collision Avoidance Feature.

2) These changes are as follows:

Left-Click Selection Rules

a) To select a task shape in OnePager 7.0 you left-click the task shape itself.
b) To select the task shape's text label left-click the text label only.

Right-Click Selection Rules

a) A right-click on a task shape accesses a context menu with commands that are associated with edits to the task shape itself.
b) A right-click on a text label accesses a specific context menu tailored with commands that are for edits to the text label.
c) When a set of task shapes and their associated text labels are in a text label collision situation, a right-click on the tasks shape accesses the context menu augmented with a command to invoke the text label collision avoidance algorithm.

Select Associated Text

3) Since these new rules represents a change from previous versions of OnePager Pro and Express with respect to selecting task shapes and their text labels, OnePager 7.0 provides an option for setting the behavior of task shape selection to that of previous versions.

a) This option is controlled by a checkbox in the Advanced tab of the Template and Chart Properties forms in the Display options control group called Select associated text.
b) The default setting in the checkbox is checked OFF.
c) Checking this checkbox ON changes the behavior of a left-click on a task shape such that the left-click selects both the task shape and the text label.
d) Regardless of the setting in the Select associated text checkbox, there is no difference in how the right-click on a task shape and/or text label operates.

4) Examples and illustrations are provided in the section below.

Changes to Task Shape and Text Label Right-Click Context Menus

5) The changes to task shape and text label selection described above offers an opportunity to simplify the context menus associated with task shapes and text labels.

a) The right-click on task shape context menu contains commands available in previous versions of OnePager Pro and Express with the addition of a new command associated with the Smart Task/Milestone Text Labeling feature - the Re-optimize text collisions for the selected task/milestones command.
b) This new context menu command is explained in greater detail in the Wiki articles referenced below.
c) The right click on a text label has a simplified context menu of two commands that allows you to edit the text label name and to access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form at the Task Label tab. As in previous OnePager versions this form allows you to turn the display of text labels ON and OFF, change their positions relative to their task shape, and change their font properties.

Selecting Task Shapes versus Selecting Task Shape Text Labels

1) Editing task/milestone shapes and task/milestone text labels changed in OnePager Pro and Express 7.0. In this context we are specifically addressing task/milestone name text labels.

a) With respect to left-click selection in OnePager 7.0, a left-click on the task/milestone shape selects and highlights only the task/milestone shape.

b) A left-click on the text label selects and highlights only the text label.

c) Right-clicking the task/milestone shape accesses the task/milestone shape context menu as shown below:

d) Right-clicking on the task/milestone text label accesses the text label context menu as shown below:

P70-0_4_2_3-70-(10)-06122019.png

2) For the task/milestone shape context menu, the commands behave exactly the same as in previous versions of OnePager.

3) For the task/milestone text label context menu, there are two commands in the context menu:

(1) Edit task name… or
(2) Format… to access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form at the Task Label tab.

4) The Edit task name… and the Format… commands both behave as in previous versions of OnePager when selected with a right-click in the text label. Please see this article for more information: Changing Individual Task/Milestone Properties (Color, Shapes, Labels, etc.) 9.2.1-70.

Making the Task/Milestone Shape Left-Click Selection Select Both the Task Shape and Text Label in One Left Click

5) OnePager 7.0 provides a control for you to change the response that a left-click on a task shape allowing a single click on the task shape to select both the task shape and its corresponding text label.

6) The control is called the Select associated text checkbox and is found in the Template and Chart Properties form’s Advanced tab in the Display options control group as shown below for the Chart Properties form:

7) If you mouse over this checkbox the following tool tip appears: When the task/milestone shape is selected, also select all text associated with the shape, including the task name, dates, and percent complete labels. As with all tool tips they are provided to assist you in determining what the control basically does.

8) As an example, the illustration below is a chart portion where there was a left-click on the task shape only when the Select associated text checkbox is checked OFF.

P70-0_4_2_3-70-(12)-06122019.png
a) Left-clicking the task shape only selects the task shape as shown above.
b) When the task shape is selected in the above example, only the Icons on the Home tool bar tab that are applicable to editing task shapes are enabled. The enabled control groups are: Editing, Settings, Font, and Format.
c) Even with the Select associated text checkbox checked OFF, left-clicks on the task shape still allow you to change Font properties but not text label position. You can change text label alignment if the text label is configured such that text label alignment changes are available.
d) However, in the situation described above, where one or more task shapes are left-clicked with the Select associated text checkbox checked OFF, you can right-click on any of the selected task shape, access its normal context menu, and use all the commands in the context menu as well as all the tabs available in the Change Task/Milestone Properties form accessed from the Format… command in the context menu.
e) Additionally, you can access the Change Task/Milestone Properties form by clicking the Format… Icon on the Home tool bar tab as shown below:

P70-0_4_2_3-70-(13)-06122019.png

9) To complete the example, the illustration below is a chart portion where the Select associated text checkbox is checked ON, and the task shape is selected with a left-click:

P70-0 4 2 3-70-(14)-06122019.png
P70-0_4_2_3-70-(14)-06122019.png
a) With the Select associated text checkbox checked ON, a left-click on the task shape selects the task shape and its text label as shown above.
b) When the task shape and text label are selected in the above example, ALL Icons on the Home tool bar tab that are applicable to editing task shapes and text labels are enabled. The applicable control groups are: Editing, Settings, Font, Format, and Position. The Alignment control group is only enabled if there is an option available to re-align the text label or text labels for selected items.
c) Essentially, checking the Select associated text checkbox ON makes the OnePager 7.0 behavior relative to left-clicking of task shapes or text labels operate the same as left-clicking only the task shape in previous versions of OnePager.
d) You can right-click on either the task shape or text label in this situation and the appropriate context menu is accessed and all associated commands operate as documented including gaining access to the Change Task/Milestone Properties form.

10) OnePager 7.0, regardless of the status of the Select associated text status of checked ON or checked OFF, permits you to right-click on any previously selected task shape or text label and accesses any of the context menu commands.
