Introduction

Microsoft Project has a feature that permits you to rename columns in your source plan where such renaming is intended to improve the readability of the source plan. For example there are thirty (30) Text columns available in Microsoft Project with names from Text1 to Text30. In a similar way there are multiple numbered column names for Cost, Date, Duration, Finish, Flag, Number, and Start.

Microsoft Project’s Alias feature allows you to rename these numbered column names to give them column names that are more meaningful and easy to remember. For example, take the Text30 column in the source plan shown below:

P71-12 06 1-71-(1)-02172022.png

The Text30 column name can be change to something more meaningful to the reader such as Project Phases by left-clicking on the Text30 column heading to access the dropdown list and then clicking the Field Setting command as shown below:

P71-12 06 1-71-(2)-02172022.png

Clicking the Field Settings command accesses Field Settings form where you can enter the alias name for the Text30 column the form’s Title: window where we’ve entered Project Phases as shown here:

P71-12 06 1-71-(3)-02172022.png

Clicking OK in the Field Settings form closes the form and updates the Text30 column heading as shown in the illustration below:

Representing a Microsoft Project Alias Column Heading Name in OnePager

Once the update to the Microsoft Project Text30 column heading is made you can import your source plan into OnePager. As the chart is created, OnePager recognizes that the Text30 column heading has an alias and uses that alias in column name dropdown lists as shown below:

P71-12 06 1-71-(5)-02172022.png

When the edit of the chart to add the Left#1 text column is completed, the modified chart looks like this:

P71-12 06 1-71-(6)-02172022.png

OnePager incorporates the original Microsoft Project Text30 column heading name as a reference. If desired, this Microsoft Project column heading name can be edited out as described below:

Editing the Chart’s Text Column Header Name

If you prefer to have OnePager just display the alias text column header name, the rest of the text can be edited out by right-clicking on the Left#1 text column header to access the Edit corner properties form as shown below:

P71-12 06 1-71-(7)-02172022.png

After editing the Text window in the Edit corner properties form to remove “(Text30)” from the text string and clicking the OK button on the form, the Left#1 Text Column Header, looks like this:

P71-12 06 1-71-(8)-02172022.png

The edit demonstrated on the chart above has no impact on the source plan’s text column heading. Other edits can be done on the chart as required. As long as the Microsoft Project source plan contains the alias text column heading it is imported into OnePager on any replacement or snapshot addition.
